Job Summary
The Laboratory of Dr. Leonard Foster, in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia will be looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 4 to join the team beginning Sept. 1st, 2023.

Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Operations Manager of the Proteomics Core Facility, Jason Rogalski, and indirectly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Leonard Foster.

Work Performed

  • Helping maintain and operate the suite of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry systems in the facility.
  • Preparation of samples for proteomics analysis.
  • Collecting, analysing, interpreting, and extracting data.
  • Working with senior management in handling irreplaceable samples
  • Overseeing/managing research accounts and assist with forecasting and budget preparations for facility.
  • Providing assistance to staff and collaborators.
  • Planning, coordinating, communicating, and managing research activities.
  • Providing advice and developing work priorities and setting timelines.
  • Managing and planning logistics requirements including laboratory supplies.
  • Providing technical expertise including troubleshooting and maintaining equipment.
  • Training and supervising of students or other collaborators
  • Overall protocol development including adapting published protocols for all aspects of the proteomics workflow including sample preparation, mass spectrometry and data analysis.
  • Preparing reports, statistics, and graphic presentations.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Consequence of errors could result in damage to sensitive scientific equipment, incorrect data and/or delays in projects, which might affect the experiments or results of others in the group, or lead to major delays in publishing, or loss of grant funding.

Supervision Received
Works under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

Supervision Given
May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees at lower classifications and may have input into staff selection and performance evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications
  • University degree in chemistry, biochemistry or related field preferred (M.Sc., Ph.D preferred).
  • Experience in a research environment
  • Detailed knowledge of and demonstrated experience with proteomics sample preparation, mass spectrometry hard- and software, as well as modern separation techniques (chromatography, electrophoresis, ion mobility)
  • Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation
  • Experience with the use and maintenance of common bioinformatics software platforms
  • Experience with proteomics experimental design and sample handling.
  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining nanoUPLC, ESI Q-TOF and TIMS-TOF instrumentation.
  • Experience using and troubleshooting common bioinformatics software platforms (for protein identification, quantitation).
  • Teaching, training, presentation and technical writing experience.
  • Effective oral and written communication, presentation, conflict resolution, problem-solving, program planning, facilitation, management, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, judgement, tact and confidentiality.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
