Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated research assistant to join the Glegg 'Knowledge to Action' Laboratory to support data gathering, analysis and knowledge mobilization tasks, primarily for the CHILD-BRIGHT Parent Voices project. The research assistant will be based at UBC Hospital Koerner Pavilion, UBC Vancouver campus. The Lab is also affiliated with the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute; work may also occur at this site. Hybrid work arrangements may be possible.
Organizational Status
The Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy (OSOT) is an established research-led department at the University of British Columbia, with many of our faculty working as leaders in their fields. We offer MSc and PhD programs as part of our graduate research, and provide clinical entry-level training in Occupational Therapy.
Work Performed

  • Conducts literature reviews using multiple databases and resources
  • Attends meetings related to assigned research projects, and takes notes as needed to guide own work tasks and to document the research process and decisions made
  • Coordinates communication with and maintains positive established relationships with research site key contacts via Zoom and email to facilitate recruitment, data gathering and data sharing. May visit external research sites (health centres) for the same on occasion.
  • Conducts qualitative data gathering via interviews and/or focus groups
  • Creates and administers online surveys
  • Conducts data entry and data cleaning to ensure data quality
  • Coordinates data management for the national study
  • Performs analyses of data from surveys, interviews, meeting minutes and other study documents, following guidance from supervisor.
  • For quantitative data, this includes descriptive statistics and generating charts, including distributed bar charts.
  • For qualitative data, this includes developing and setting up coding frameworks in NVivo, independently coding data, refining coding approaches based on consensus meetings with team members, and synthesizing results.
  • For document review, it includes extracting key data, compiling it from across multiple research sites, summarizing key similarities and differences across sites, applying implementation science frameworks to categorize data, and presenting it to the study team
  • The role may also include intervention mapping by applying implementation science frameworks to map barriers and facilitators to implementation strategies to draft site-specific implementation plans, as well as refining them based on site team input
  • Synthesizes findings in the form of tables, graphs, figures, bullet points, paragraphs, slide decks, short summaries, and/or infographics
  • Drafts sections of manuscripts and reports, prepares and/or delivers oral presentations to external partners/research sites and/or prepares scientific posters
  • Formats and submits prepared manuscripts for publication to specified scientific journals
  • Maintains confidential records in keeping with Research Ethics Board requirements
  • Drafts ethics applications and amendments based on team discussions and supervisor input, following orientation to the RISe platform. Incorporates feedback to refine applications and to prepare Post-Approval Activities for review and submission.
  • Documents protocols and procedures related to own tasks to support future training
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, reputation, collaboration, and financial status of the research project. Inappropriate judgment or lapses in attention to detail could result in fundamental flaws in the research results, in funding shortfalls for research grants or contracts, and loss of future research partnerships.
Supervision Received
Reports directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Stephanie Glegg. Also receives guidance from Co-PI Dr. Thuy Mai Luu (CHU Sainte-Justine, Montreal) and Project Coordinator Dr. Catherine Demers (Universite de Quebec a Trois Rivieres).
Supervision Given
None but may explain work sequences to others.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BSc. in health sciences or related discipline.
  • Master's degree an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to use standard office software (including MS Office) and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to write in clear, concise business English and in plain language.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work.
  • Ability to review, interpret, and apply policies.
  • Ability to effectively analyze and interpret data and information.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.

  • Experience with patient-oriented/partnered research an asset.
  • Experience supporting social network analysis research an asset.
  • Experience with Qualtrics, NVivo, UCINet and NetDraw research software is an asset.
