Job Summary
UBCs Department of Psychiatry is an internationally recognized academic unit that develop and implements cutting-edge research, clinical and implementation projects in the field of mental health and substance use. We work closely with decision-makers, the community, and other stakeholders to answer key challenges referred to basic science, clinical practice, health systems, population mental health, and epidemiology. Our goal is to improve delivery of mental health and substance use services to ultimately impact health outcomes of people from BC, Canada, and globally.
The Research Assistant will be responsible for performing research and administrative work related to various projects within the Mental Health Systems and Services Laboratory, such as needs-based planning for mental health and substance use services, e-mental health for University and secondary students and other related studies. They will perform various logistical and research activities related to the design, implementation, execution, and evaluation of research activities and deliverables, as indicated by the PI and other senior project staff. This position will have focus on survey management, qualitative work, programming app content, including integration of UI/UX platforms and chatbot content and developing tools and dashboards for various mental health services.
Organizational Status
The RA will work with an inter-disciplinary team of academics, research assistants and students, reporting to the Research Coordinator for day-to-day operations, and receiving direct supervision from the PI.
Work Performed
The RA will be expected to assist with the following activities, working together with other RAs, under supervision from the Research Coordinator and the Principal Investigator:
Plan and perform complex research tasks and procedures such as: literature review, survey management using Qualtrics, qualitative interview analysis, other tasks as the need arises) Plan and perform complex programming of app content, including chatbot and UI/UX content, using commonly available software and tools in a self-directed manner. Assist senior lab members with drafting, editing and referencing of manuscripts, reports, presentations, and other material related to the project(s). Present research results at laboratory meetings, stakeholder meetings, and at conferences and symposia. Logistical and administrative activities related to research projects, including drafting documentation for submission for ethics approval, developing frameworks for collaboration with partners and other related activities Keep projects on track to meet the expected milestones, outputs and deliverables. Support collaboration and coordination across multiple study sites, including scheduling calls, teleconferences, and other activities as needed Provide logistical support (booking rooms, distributing agendas, taking meeting minutes, etc.) to team meetings, partnerships with stakeholders, Advisory Committee meetings, Expert consultations, as well as documenting these encounters. Designs and maintains lab outreach materials, such as website updates, redesigns and developing dashboard materials for stakeholders Other activities related to the research projects
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work will involve complex methods, knowledge, and procedures. Tasks are assigned by the Research Coordinator and/or PI and the RA will plan and schedule their own work.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.
Supervision Given
None required, but will be expected to convey procedures and lessons learned to new staff and provide mentorship and training to students.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • University degree in health or social sciences is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English including report writing and publication/presentation of research activities and results to diverse stakeholders
  • Experience conducting literature reviews and ability to understand and synthesize results from quantitative and qualitative data sources
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Experience in programming related to chatbots, or experience with UI/UX and app development would be preferred.
