Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

Position Overview:

The successful candidate will join a large collaborative research project involving multiple academic institutions and industry partners. The research assistant will work primarily on executing and planning a plant-growth schedule, as well as using different imagers and scanners to collect plant data. Further, the assistant will research and establish growing conditions for the plants researched in the project.

Duties:

  • Grow and tend to plants in the growth chamber 4C36 and in the lab 3RC033.
  • Wash pots, mix soil, pot plants.
  • Operating the project's growing chamber and programmable lights.
  • Work together with the other team-members to execute a growing schedule that allows to continuously monitor multiple generations of plants of each crop.
  • Perform data collection with the project's imagers.
  • Maintain a catalogue of all the project's available seeds.
Qualifications:
  • Experience of growing plants in the field and indoors
  • Experience in researching optimal growing conditions for plants
  • Experience with usage/construction of automated watering systems and/or hydroponic systems
  • Basic coding skills
  • Knowledge in plant biology
  • Proven ability to work independently and under minimal supervision
  • An eye for detail and the discipline to keep a schedule
  • The interest in working within an interdisciplinary team
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from November 14, 2022 - October 27, 2023 and the estimated total hours of work will be 200-400 hours.
