Job Summary
The research assistant (RA) will support the principal investigator (Dr Kristin Campbell) and research staff and trainees in the Cancer Exercise & Physiotherapy lab (CEPL) on exercise oncology research projects. The RA will coordinate clinical research studies as well as support the development of and delivery of study exercise interventions for people living with a cancer diagnosis. The RA will be an exercise professional with exercise testing, exercise prescription and exercise supervision experience, ideally with clinical populations. The RA will support other staff (research manager, RAs) and trainees that are working on projects to recruit subjects, collect and analyze data as well as deliver exercise interventions



Organizational Status
Reports directly to the study Principal Investigator, (K. Campbell). Works closely with research staff and trainees in the CEPL.



Working Relationship
The position will work directly with the investigators who are mounting the studies. Responsibilities include working independently in a setting that involves varied and complex technical tasks such as recruitment and screening for various studies, exercise testing in a clinical population, developing exercise prescriptions, delivering exercise sessions, data collection and data entry, research study coordination, collaboration with key interested parties and supervising staff, students or volunteers associated with the studies.
Work PerformedScreening participants for eligibility to participate in the clinical research studies Managing and collecting study outcome data Conducting exercise and physical function assessments (in-person and/or virtual platform) including but not limited to: submaximal and maximal graded exercise tests, 1-repetition maximum and multi-repetition strength testing, measures of physical function and body composition Delivering and adjusting exercise prescriptions as part of the study protocol in-person and / or through a virtual platform Developing or adapting assessment protocols and exercise interventions for future studies Maintaining the emergency action plan for the facility Overseeing daily operations of the fitness facility. This includes weekly equipment maintenance and safety checks as well as repairing or replacing lab and research study equipment as needed. Supervising, scheduling and training staff and student helpers and volunteers Writing reports and weekly updates on adherence to the intervention Supporting recruitment and outreach efforts Carrying out all other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Inappropriate judgment would compromise the quality of the research study, related data acquisition, and the reporting of research outcomes.
Inappropriate judgment would also compromise research success, participant safety and ethical approval, thus affecting the credibility of the Investigators.

Supervision Received
Employee will work with general supervision, receiving instruction only on new or unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedures.



Supervision Given
May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees at lower classifications and/or volunteers. The position requires a strong independent work ethic and a candidate capable of setting their priorities within a given framework, and working within agreed-upon milestones and timelines.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Human subject research laboratory environment.
Education & Experience:Minimum of an undergraduate degree in related field with a minimum of 3 years' experience in the field or an equivalent of education and experience in the field. Preference given to Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CSEP, ACSM), British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK) Kinesiologist, Registered Physical Therapist or documented related experience. Certified in CPR-C or BLS. A minimum of 3 years of related experience in exercise testing, exercise prescription, and exercise supervision with clinical populations or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with people living with and beyond cancer preferred. Experience developing, overseeing and administering exercise interventions for research projects preferred. Experience with managing data collection and participant tracking for research projects preferred. Experience with day to day fitness facility maintenance and operations preferred.

Preferred QualificationsDemonstrated ability to organize work and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Excellent organizational skills including ability to manage multiple tasks. Demonstrated ability to complete exercise testing (in-person and virtual settings). Demonstrated ability to develop, appropriately modify and deliver an exercise prescription. Emergency Action Planning skills. Demonstrated ability to organize work and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Demonstrated excellence in organizational and decision-making skills. Attention to detail and accuracy. Discretion, tact and confidentiality. * Proficiency using various word processing, spread sheet, and presentation programs.
