The Research Assistant will work on a variety of projects within the Men's Health Research (MHR) program ( ), including the Reducing Male Suicide Research Excellence Cluster ( ). MHR develops, implements and formally evaluates community-based and e-health interventions addressing mens mental health, depression and suicide, psychosocial prostate cancer care, and tobacco reduction and smoking cessation in fathers and men.The Research Assistant will support the Research Manager Dr. Nina Gao in the coordination of all MHR research projects, including coordinating study recruitment and interviews, organizing team meetings, and developing and submitting research proposals and manuscripts.The Research Assistant will be based in the MHR program unit at the UBC School of Nursing in Vancouver, BC.Organizational Status
The Research Assistant directly reports to the Research Manager Dr. Nina Gao and Principal Investigator Dr. John Oliffe. The Research Assistant collaborates with and is responsible for communications with various team members, including project collaborators and health professionals.Work PerformedAssist with research grant application activities, such as preparing grant application packages, updating investigators' CVs, and collecting required documents from investigatorsAssist with coordinating regular updates and reporting to funding partnersAssist with study recruitment and scheduling interviewsAssist with accuracy checks on transcribed interview dataAssist with the set up and maintenance of files, data tracking and storageAssist with administrative duties including CV management and manuscript formatting and submissionAssist with MHRs knowledge translation effortsAssist with MHRs scoping and systematic reviewsEnsure timely notification to Research Manager of issues or problemsConsequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Manager and Principal Investigator will monitor the work of the incumbent. Errors or incorrect decisions could potentially result in delays in completing the project or seriously compromise the quality of the research.Supervision Received
The Research Assistant reports to the MHR Research Manager Dr. Nina Gao and Principal Investigator Dr. John Oliffe. Work is reviewed periodically by the PI to assess the scope of work performed and the achievement of defined goals and key performance indicators.Supervision Given
None but may explain work sequences to others.Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with ones own- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsExperience in qualitative research methods, including data collection and analysisExperience in research program and team coordinationExperience in conducting scoping and/or systematic reviewsDemonstrated interest in mens health or mental healthDemonstrated excellence in organization and time managementDemonstrated excellence in communication, conflict resolution and debriefing skillsDemonstrated expertise in varied types of computer software (MS Word, MS Excel, NVivo)Demonstrated ability in research analysis and writing an assetDemonstrated ability in knowledge translation (e.g., creating infographics, managing social media accounts) an assetDemonstrated ability to be self-directed and work independently and in a team environmentDemonstrated ability to identify own areas for professional development and work collaboratively with supervisor to develop a plan to achieve these goal
