Reporting to Co-Chief Curator, the Research Assistant will be supervised by Dan Mishra Senior Curator of Global South Asian Art and Culture to assist in curatorial research pertaining to South Asian Gallery in development. The Research Assistant will participate in projects, as advised by supervising curator(s) related to research, publication, exhibition, learning and program, as well as to assist in research related to collection care including but not limited to loans and acquisitions in assigned collection area(s).RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Dan Mishra Curator of Global South Asia in research pertaining to the development of the new permanent gallery of Global South Asia, including but not limited to:
  • Researching artworks in the collection and potential acquisitions
  • Participating in South Asian gallery development meetings
  • Assisting with South Asian community consultation and advisory groups
  • Researching and advising on new narratives, methodologies, and approaches to the understanding and presentation of Global South Asian art history in a museum setting
  • Interact with various South Asia stakeholders across the ROM, including but not limited to:
  • Curators of other collection areas
  • Collection care staff
  • Exhibition development team
  • South Asia Community Engagement Coordinator
  • Friends of South Asia
  • ROM Governors staff
  • Others
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Enrolment in or have a graduate degree in Art, History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • Experience working in the museum curatorial environment and familiarity with museum database programs (e.g. TMS) and digitizing equipment and software is preferred.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and writing skills
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills to meet project deadlines and goals.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a diverse team environment.
  • Strong research and analytical skills to contribute effectively to the understanding of assigned collection areas.
  • Proficiency in a South Asian language
