Position summary



Department / Research Program: CORE



Projects goal: Improving outcomes and use of healthcare services for all people with dementia, through an equity lens. The incumbent will mainly be working on mixed-method projects (quantitative and qualitative) on equity for people with dementia, exploring the differences in their health services use and experiences across social-determinants of health and their interactions, to inform equity-oriented policies.

As an early career researcher, building my lab, I am looking for a research assistant to build a long-term, productive relationship with, to help with mixed-methods (especially qualitative) research projects focusing on improving care for older people with dementia. This is a one-year, part or full-time position with the possibility for renewal and/or promotion pending fit and available funds. I am looking for someone who will stay in the position for at least 3 years. This position offers a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to design, implement, and lead qualitative research projects aimed at advancing equity in dementia care. The incumbent will have substantial input into the direction of qualitative objectives within the research group.



General Duties




The incumbent will participate in a variety of research activities, especially those involving leading the design, implementation, and analysis of qualitative research studies, including:

Leading and managing qualitative research in the lab. This includes:

o Designing and developing qualitative research methods (study protocols, interview guides, focus group guides, data collection techniques such as semi-structured interviews, participatory methods),

o Selecting comprehensive qualitative analysis techniques (e.g., thematic analysis, framework analysis, grounded theory, qualitative description),


o Organising and facilitating data collection (e.g., community meetings, focus groups, interviews),

o Undertaking data analysis using specialized software such as Atlas.ti and NVivo,

o Ensuring rigour of research (e.g., quality of coding, internal consistency, fidelity monitoring),

o Training team members on interviewing and qualitative research methods, ethical considerations, best practices, and techniques,

o Staying updates on cutting-edge qualitative methods and equity in dementia care.

Supervising junior research assistants and their work, Collaborating closely and regularly with patient partners (people with dementia and their care partners), community partners (community organisations) to understand their needs and priorities and to conduct mixed-methods research alongside them, Developing qualitative research methods for ethics submissions, grant proposals, and research protocols and helping draft documents, Contributing to research dissemination by writing and presenting both qualitative and quantitative findings in reports, manuscripts, and presentations for varied audiences.

Education / Experience




Education: Master's Degree

Field of Study: Not restricted, but prefer Public Health, Sociology, Anthropology, Health Services Research, Medicine, Epidemiology, Psychology, etc.



Work Experience: At least 2-3 years of experience in qualitative research, including designing and conducting qualitative studies.

Required Skills



Bilingual, spoken and written, Strong understanding of qualitative research methodologies (e.g., interviews, focus groups, ethnography, case studies, etc.) and demonstrable experience in undertaking qualitative research, including independent projects, Experience in qualitative analysis techniques (e.g., thematic analysis, grounded theory, content analysis, etc) and using relevant software (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti, MAXQDA), Familiarity with ethics and regulatory processes in research and in working on ethics submissions and grant applications, Exemplary writing skills with demonstrable experience in writing for academic and community audiences (e.g., publications, reports, grey literature, infographics, pamphlets, etc.), Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, experience working with patient and community partners is an asset, Autonomy (with minimum supervision after appropriate training), drive, initiative, creativity, curiosity, Team player, Detail-oriented, resourceful, strong problem-solving skills, multitasking abilities, organized.

The following are assets:

At least 1 year of experience with quantitative research methods, to be able to draft papers (high-level expertise in quantitative data analysis not necessary but appreciated) in quantitative research, Prior experience in working with health administrative databases, causal inference methods, biostatistics, Prior experience in supervising and training trainees, Advanced knowledge of equity-related literature, including social determinants of health, intersectionality, and anti-racism, Experience working with historically marginalised populations, Proficient at using MS Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Forms, Teams, etc.), and reference management software.

Pay Scale:

Commensurate with education and experience. $48,503.00 - $90,090.00.

Variable Schedule (Working hours are flexible, but typically land between 9:00-17:00)

Work Site:

Hybrid

If other: Montreal General Hospital. Flexible: with at least 1-2 days on site, when collecting data, there may be more in-person workdays.
