Department: Truth and Reconciliation, IRS and Miller Bay Project



Location: Prince Rupert (Remote possibility)



Reporting to: Project Manager



Contract Position with the possibility of renewal



The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Truth and Reconciliation Department have an immediate opening for a contract full time Research Assistant to join the Truth and Reconciliation team. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Lead Researcher with archival research, data entry, digitization of records, transcription and other tasks related to the research component of the Project. They will join a passionate team that is committed to complete confidentiality regarding the materials investigated in the research.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:



Assist in reviewing relevant files and documents.

Assist in digitizing archival records and organizing them in the provided manner.

Analyze, summarize and interpret data, while also assisting in primary source analysis.

Transcribe primary sources, testimonies, audio files and other information.

Record, analyze and code data accurately and efficiently.

Assist and support Warrior Testimonies.

Attend Project meetings and required events.

Write reports and support other research tasks related to the Project.

Assist in additional tasks as needed.

Qualifications: Education, Experience and Knowledge



Bachelor's Degree in Indigenous Studies, History, Sociology, Archival Studies or another related field.

2 or more years of experience with archival research, primary source analysis and historical analysis.

Experience with archival research databases such as Library and Archives Canada.

Proficient use of information technologies, including Microsoft Office Suite, presentation and developing tools, online visual editing tools, archival databases and social media channels.

Ability to work respectfully and effectively within Indigenous contexts and with sensitive topics.

Knowledge of digital records preservation techniques and standards.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent organizational, analytics and interpretive skills.

Knowledge of Coast Ts'msyen culture and practices and demonstrated ability to work successfully with First Nation communities.

A good knowledge of the history of post Confederation British Columbia, and the Department of Indian Affairs and its bureaucratic evolution.

Knowledge of the history and operations of Indian Residential School systems throughout Canada.

Willingness to learn and grow within a dynamic team.

Compensation



1 year contract with the possibility of renewal.

Full time, 35h hours a week.

$30 an hour
