Metaboly is a veterinary health sciences company pioneering new technologies for animal, farm, and agricultural system resilience. Based at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, Metaboly develops practical, science-backed tools that translate laboratory research into early, actionable insights for producers, other researchers, and industry partners.
Built on grant-supported research, Metaboly specializes in the analysis of biological and environmental indicators using non-invasive samples such as feed, forage, water, and other environmental matrices. Our work spans equine and livestock systems, with a strong focus on early toxin detection, environmental exposure monitoring, and farm-level early-warning systems that support proactive intervention.
Operating at the intersection of academic research and applied diagnostics, Metaboly combines scientific inquiry with real-world practicality. We prioritize affordability, scalability, and robust laboratory practices to ensure our technologies can be deployed where they matter most--on farms. Metaboly operates within a university research environment while maintaining the agility of a growing biotechnology startup, offering team members close collaboration with senior researchers and leadership.
As Metaboly continues to expand it's One Health platform, this role offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to pioneering technology while gaining hands-on exposure to the full innovation lifecycle--from method development and validation to real-world deployment. At Metaboly, we believe that better data leads to better outcomes.
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to support daily laboratory operations. This is a hands-on role well suited for an individual who thrives in a research environment and is comfortable working independently.
In addition to supporting core laboratory and diagnostic activities, the Research Assistant will be responsible for completing an independent research project with a focus on mass spectrometry, conducted under the guidance of senior scientists. Approximately 40% of this role will be dedicated to project-based research, including experimental planning, sample preparation, data collection, and documentation. The remaining 60% of the role will support daily laboratory operations, including the preparation and shipment of test kits, receipt and processing of client-submitted samples, execution of basic laboratory analyses (including parasitology and microscopy), preparation of samples for downstream analysis by other researchers, and basic data entry.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare reagents, buffers, media, and basic laboratory consumables
Perform basic laboratory experiments and protocols as directed
Maintain accurate laboratory records, data entry, and sample tracking
Clean, sterilize, organize, and maintain laboratory glassware and equipment
Ensure general lab upkeep, organization, and cleanliness
Assemble, package, and ship diagnostic test kits to national clients
Receive, log, and triage returned biological samples
Perform basic parasitology screenings and microscopy-based analyses
Prepare samples for further analysis, including stabilization, preservation, and storage
Monitor, document, and record experimental and analytical results
Assist with inventory management and ordering laboratory supplies
Dispose of biohazardous and chemical waste in accordance with safety protocols
Support adherence to laboratory safety, quality control, and documentation standards
Assist with data collection, routine reporting, and documentation
Support other laboratory personnel with day-to-day research and operational tasks
Suitability
This role is particularly well suited for graduate-level students--though strong undergraduate applicants are highly encouraged to apply--who are seeking substantive research experience. The position is structured to support students wishing to remain in the Peterborough region throughout the summer academic term while working within Trent University's research ecosystem. Embedded within a university-based startup, the role provides close interaction with active researchers and scientists and offers experience that is well aligned with future applications to competitive funding programs (NSERC, OGS).
Requirements & Qualifications
Candidates should demonstrate a strong attention to detail, a high level of organization, and the ability to work independently with accountability. The successful applicant must be comfortable following laboratory protocols, maintaining accurate records, and handling biological samples in accordance with established safety and quality standards.
Applicants should have a background or current training in a relevant field such as biology, biochemistry, animal science, veterinary science, environmental science, chemistry, or a related discipline. A bachelor degree is considered an asset, though not required. Prior laboratory experience--academic, industry, or diagnostic--is strongly preferred, particularly experience involving sample preparation, basic wet-lab techniques, or microscopy. Experience or interest in parasitology, analytical chemistry, or mass spectrometry is considered an asset, though direct mass spectrometry experience is not required.
The role requires strong time-management skills and the ability to balance an independent research project with other day-to-day responsibilities. Candidates must be self-motivated, reliable, and comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy, while also being able to collaborate effectively with senior scientists as needed. Strong written documentation skills, basic data handling or data entry experience, and a willingness to learn new laboratory techniques are essential.
Position Duration
This position is intended as a
summer research role (May-Aug)

Physical and Safety Requirements
This role is conducted in a laboratory environment and may involve standing for extended periods, handling biological and environmental samples, and performing routine laboratory tasks in accordance with established health, safety, and biosecurity protocols. As Metaboly works with samples originating from farm environments, including biological materials derived from livestock, certain occupational health considerations apply.
In alignment with standard laboratory biosafety practices,
vaccination against Hepatitis B is strongly recommended
for individuals working with biological samples. Where applicable, vaccination status or a documented declination may be requested as part of laboratory safety and risk management procedures.
