Empowering Indigenous Students:

A Community-based Approach to Enhancing Mental Health Knowledge and Efficacy, RP#178



This project concerns mental health knowledge and the empowerment of Indigenous students to take action toward better mental health and doing so in a culturally appropriate way.

The current project will first get a panel together so that we can propose a program (new CIHR funded project) that would function to improve mental health knowledge from an Indigenous perspective and empower students to learn about mental health options that are not steeped in colonialism and will inform them about culturally consistent intervention options and where to seek them.



Duties:



The student liaison will canvass Indigenous students to be a part of a panel/meeting in late March 2025 The student will report to Dr Norma Dunning about the interest of Indigenous students to gather as a group to discuss Indigenous methods of mental health support The student liaison will aid in the preparation of a survey to be distributed during the March gathering The student liaison will act as a note taker at this event The student liaison will help with the setting up and taking down of meeting requirements (tables, chairs, aid the Elders present, set up a whiteboard)

Qualifications:



Registered student of First Nations University of Canada Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) would be an asset. Strong organizational skills Strong written communication skills
