Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus, Edmonton.
Position Summary
The Research Assistant: Derisking Energy Systems will support research and modelling activities aimed at advancing safe, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions. This role is responsible for collecting and compiling operational, facility, and energy-use data to inform project modelling and system design.
The Research Assistant will conduct demand assessments for various facility types, such as hospitals, and perform preliminary technical feasibility analyses, including system sizing and performance evaluation. They will contribute to techno-economic modelling by assessing costs, system performance, and environmental impacts.
Additionally, the role involves reviewing regulatory and code requirements related to hydrogen and combined heat and power (CHP) installations, and supporting the development of regulatory and policy frameworks that enable safe and compliant energy system deployment.
Responsibilities:

  • Collecting and compiling relevant operational, facility, and energy-use data required for different projects; modelling.
  • Conducting demand assessment to determine baseline energy requirements for different facilities, such as hospitals.
  • Performing preliminary technical feasibility analysis and developing sizing calculations for the different systems.
  • Completing techno-economic modelling, including cost estimation, performance evaluation, and environmental impact assessment.
  • Developing a regulatory and policy framework
  • Reviewing applicable regulatory and code requirements governing hydrogen and CHP installations.
Qualifications:
  • Master's in Science / Engineering.
  • Experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing technical or operational datasets.
  • Experience conducting energy demand assessments or working with energy-use data for facilities (e.g., hospitals, industrial sites, campuses).
  • Experience performing technical feasibility assessments, including system sizing or performance calculations.
  • Experience with techno-economic modelling, including cost analysis, performance evaluation, or environmental impact assessment.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulatory codes, standards, or permitting requirements related to hydrogen, CHP systems, or energy infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with analytical tools or software such as Python, MATLAB, Excel, or energy modelling platforms.
  • Experience in energy systems engineering, hydrogen systems, or combined heat and power (CHP) technologies.
  • Experience interpreting policy or developing regulatory frameworks.
