Position Overview The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Part-time position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. This position reports to the Principal Investigator. Research Assistant will assist in planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating the activities and operations of a research and development laboratory, including quality assurance and control. They will assist in developing and implementing policies, standards and procedures for the scientific and technical work performed in the laboratory. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Under general supervision & direction of the PI, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Assist in planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating the activities and operations of a research and development laboratory, including quality assurance and control
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, laboratory experiments and other research for us in scholarly publications when required to
  • Use of various biological samples (eg. tissues, blood, urine, etc)
  • Responsible for management, maintenance, or control of a specialized area
  • Involved in developing, running, fine-tuning and assessing the quality of several immunoassays and related technologies
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Budget involvement including developing reports, tracking expenses, and reconciliation of accounts
  • Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and processes
  • Involved in the organization of the day-to-day administration of the laboratory
  • Responsible for ordering, and stock checking
  • Responsible for repairs of equipment, ensuring safety compliance
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Minimum 3 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in biological or biomedical sciences
  • Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Able to identify anti-nuclear antibodies pattern using indirect immunofluorescence method
  • Have some experience working with, designing and evaluating new immunoassays, including: Luminex, Bio Flash, ELISA, cell based and line immunoassays
  • Have some experience with quality assurance of immunoassays including engaging in external quality control (EQA)
  • Have some experience with molecular cloning and protein expression
  • Have some experience with tissue and cell culture
  • Experience Developing novel monoclonal antibodies
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Direct and demonstrable research experience in the subject matter of the research project is essential
  • Assist in performing detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Experience with various biological samples (e.g. blood, tissues, urine, etc.)
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat and PhotoShop, Internet skills
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • WHIMS Certification
