Job Description

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

Position Overview:

With the recent release of the Manitoba Critical Minerals Strategy, there is renewed interest in mining in the Province. This project is designed to create material to communicate information about the state of mining in Manitoba, including information about what is a critical mineral, the location of existing and future mine sites, etc. The bulk of the work involves data organization & communication, although there will be some components for data collection.

Duties:

The candidate will assist in organizing data related to critical minerals in Manitoba. In consultation with the supervisor, specific activities include:

• Organizing existing data, and compiling additional information about mining projects in Manitoba;
• Developing a mapping portal of provincial mineral developments;
• Preparing communication material, including infographics, to support public education;
• Other activities as arising.

Qualifications

• The ideal candidate will have academic (e.g., GEOG 2306 or equivalent) and experience related to geographic information systems. They will have completed, or be in the process of completing, the methods class in Geography and/or Environmental Studies.
• Knowledge of GIS software is essential.
• Past experience (including course assignments) designing infographics is an asset.
• Work experience related to data collection and organization is an asset.
• The candidate should have access to a personal computer, or ability to work in the Geography Department computer labs.

Condition(s) of Employment:

• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from September 18, 2023 - April 26, 2024 and the estimated total hours of work will be 20-60 hours.
