The University of Winnipeg is a comprehensive research university with a strong culture of research, scholarship, creativity, and innovation that spans the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and education. Within Financial Services, the Research Accounting function is seeking a full-time, term Research and Grants Accountant.
The Research and Grants Accountant is responsible for administering research and other award accounts, supporting the preparation of year-end financial reporting, and supervising the Research and Grants Accounting Assistant.
Responsibilities:

  • Opens and closes award accounts.
  • Monitors account transactions for over-expenditures and unusual transactions.
  • Works with Researchers and the Research Office to correct errors and resolve over-expended accounts.
  • Reviews award accounts to ensure that they are current, ensures funds for dormant accounts are returned.
  • Provides support and financial guidance to researchers.
  • Review and approve all research expenditures for eligibility, based on expense eligibility guidelines.
  • Reviews all payments and purchases from research and designated fund accounts for availability of funds prior to payment and authorizes payment vouchers for availability of funds.
  • Analysis of accounts when required or requested.
  • Records grant payments received.
  • Preparation of billings to granting agencies as required.
  • Administration of receivable of grant billings.
  • Assists Senior Research and Grants Accountant with preparing and submitting annual and periodic external financial statements for funding agencies.
  • Supervision, mentoring and training of the Research and Grants Accounting Assistant.
  • Assists the Senior Research and Grants Accountant with other duties as requested.
Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree would be an asset.
  • Professional accounting designation (e.g. CPA) or close to completion
  • Must have at least 3 years related experience.
  • Experience with Research or other public sector Grants would be an asset
  • Must have experience and skills in computer technology.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel preferred.
  • Must have very effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have superior problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Must have the ability to work well and build relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Good organizational ability is required to meet deadlines.
  • The ability to balance the needs of researchers to complete their work with the accountability needs of the funding agencies and University.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The salary range for this position will be from $53,926.60 to $74,765.60 annually.
Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person, with an opportunity to apply for Remote Work for up to two (2) days per week.
