Position Overview

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

CAREX Canada is a multi-institution team of researchers and specialist with expertise in epidemiology, risk assessment, occupational hygiene, geographic information systems and knowledge mobilization. The purpose of CAREX Canada is to provide a body of knowledge about Canadians\' exposures to known and suspected carcinogens, to support organizations in prioritizing exposures and in developing targeted exposure reduction policies and programs.

As a member of the CAREX Canada team, this position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Analyst will be responsible for reviewing and cleaning occupational hygiene measurement data for analysis and producing and updating estimates of the proportion of Canadians exposed to various carcinogens at work using published scientific literature, government/industry exposure measurements, and professional opinion. This work will also include updating, maintaining, and managing the CAREX occupational carcinogen exposure database and assisting in the development of future tools. The Research Analyst uses their strong data interpretation, research, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate research to knowledge users. They engage and collaborate with key stakeholders and external partners, to support knowledge translation and mobilization plans.

This is a maternity leave replacement position.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • LEADERSHIP
  • Providing expert opinion and assisting in defining the overall direction and priorities of research
  • Supporting and advising on the development of research approaches that align with CAREX Canada priorities
  • Identifying research goals and objectives
  • Recommending research best practices
  • Assisting with overseeing the progress of projects
  • Supporting the management of CAREX trainee projects
  • PROJECT DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGMENT:
  • Determining research priorities, approaches, and associated activities
  • Coordinating and assisting with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of research studies
  • Supporting the design of research projects
  • Designing, modifying, and conducting research projects
  • Researching and determining the applicability of new technology and systems related to research project work
  • RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
  • Utilize their extensive knowledge in exposure monitoring and occupational and environmental health to support and contribute to the development of research plans and the execution of research activities
  • Reviewing and cleaning occupational hygiene measurement data for analysis
  • Producing and updating estimates of the proportion of Canadians exposed to various carcinogens at work using published scientific literature, government/industry exposure measurements, and professional opinion
  • Leading the set up and execution of research activities and work
  • Developing processes, protocols, and procedures to effectively execute research activities
  • Performing literature reviews
  • Observing, recording and/or coding data
  • Selecting journals and peer-reviewers for manuscript submission, preparing manuscripts for publication and communicating with journal authors, reviewers, etc.
  • Performing surveys and/or conducting interviews
  • Editing and translating data
  • Preparing scientific and public reports of findings (e.g., presentation, manuscript writing, final report)
  • DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
  • Updating, maintaining, and managing the CAREX occupational carcinogen exposure database and assisting in the development of future tools
  • Leading and coordinating data collection, sampling, identification and/or preparation
  • Administering forms or questionnaires and recording and/or coding data
  • Conducting the analysis and interpretation of experimental results or research data
  • Managing and maintaining research related records and databases
  • WRITING/REPORTING
  • Maintaining and developing carcinogen profiles, "Carcinogens in the News" digest, and responding to informational requests related to occupational and environmental health topics
  • Writing reports and summaries of findings
  • Assisting in overseeing project compliance, and ethics and grant applications
  • Contributing to and/or leading policy reports and academic publications
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Masters degree in health sciences, public health, or occupational hygiene/health
  • 5 years of recent, relevant experience based in exposure monitoring and occupational and environmental health
  • Demonstrated program development and research methodologies, and project management skills
  • Expertise in occupational and environmental exposure assessment
  • Experience interpreting regulations and acts, as it pertains to occupational and environmental health
  • Knowledge and expertise in data management and ability to prepare simple descriptive statistics
  • Able to interpret and prepare scientific and public reports
  • Able to support grant writing
  • Strong organizational, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Experience effectively engaging stakeholders
  • Experience facilitating presentations and meetings
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience using Covidence, Qualtrics and other various web-based applications, analytical software (e.g., SAS, R, STATA, NVivo), and website-related experience (e.g. WordPress, basic understanding of HTML) are considered assets
