The Haven Youth Shelter provides service with dignity to youth in need of food, shelter and other essentials. We work collaboratively to develop realistic community awareness of homelessness and provide an important link between housing, people, and the resources they need, including (but not limited to) services such as shelter, food, hygiene, life skills counseling, mental health support, addictions support, crisis support, and housing advocacy.
Responsibilities and Key Duties:
Implement the daily routines of the program while adhering to agency policy and program procedures.
Participate in a variety of programming responsibilities including life skill lessons, support and direction for client transition to the community.
Provide support and guidance to the clients and also to those for which the agency acts as Trustee for development of self-esteem, improved interpersonal relationships and skills for independent living.
Ensure the safety and well-being of the clients on all shifts including enforcing rules of safety, curfews, and supervising meal preparation
Provide support for other Inn of the Good Shepherd programs and assist with the placement and supervision of The Haven clients in these programs.
Perform all other necessary tasks and duties deemed appropriate by the Program Coordinator.
Ensure availability on an on-call basis.
Qualifications
University/College diploma in SSW, CYC, ECE, MHA and/or combination of education and related life experience.
Understanding and practice of the Trauma-Informed Care Approach and the Housing First Model.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills
Competent on word processing equipment, such as Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Excel.
Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and under supervision.
Demonstrates knowledge of Community based resources.
Possess current First Aid, CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates.
Provide an original copy of a Criminal Records Check (CRC) with vulnerable sector screening secured through the national Canadian Police Information Centre or through a local police detachment
Support for and an understanding of the purpose and mission of The Inn of the Good Shepherd and the Good Shepherds Lodge
