The Cook/Food Services Worker is an integral member of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, responsible for developing teaching and preparing nutritionally balanced and culturally appropriate meal plans and sample menus to enhance food security for the 389 Church Street residents and their children. In addition to culinary duties, the Food Services Worker acts as a valuable resource for both staff and program participants, promoting a supportive, inclusive environment.



ABOUT YWCA TORONTO - HOUSING SUPPORT PROGRAM, CHURCH STREET

YWCA Toronto Church Street facility includes 120 units of permanent housing. The Case Worker is responsible for providing case management support to women and gender diverse people including: individuals with complex mental health issues and who are chronically homeless or at risk of homelessness; individuals transitioning from provincially-funded institutions and service systems such as hospitals or prisons; Indigenous women/two-spirit people. The program goals include housing stabilization, harm reduction, and health promotion. Individual and group support assists tenants to identify and build the skills required to address the barriers they experience in their lives and to maintain their housing.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Supports the design and implementation of programming that focuses on the promotion of wellness and engagement in community through food-based activities;
• Monitoring and controlling inventory, and notifying the management when supplies are low in the (pantry and Breakfast program);
• Observing health and safety guidelines to ensure that food hygiene standards are met during food programs;
• Prepares morning Breakfast meals for program participants Tuesdays & Thursdays;
• Unpack and store food and supplies, some heavy lifting may be required (i.e.: boxes);
• Orders food items as needed including milk, bread, cleaning supplies and paper products;
• Provides oversight of kitchen including inventory of kitchenware and supplies;
• Washes dishes, pots, pans and other equipment used to prepare the breakfast meals Tuesdays &Thursdays;
• Required to completely clean the kitchen at least twice weekly, including all appliances;
• Maintains cleanliness of all food areas: Cleans and maintains the cleanliness of food surfaces, equipment, storage, fridge and freezers.

QUALIFICATIONS • A generalized education at the high school level, including e.g. training/certificate in public health standards and general nutrition (Cases for Equivalency will be considered) ;
• Valid Food Handlers Certificate required;
• 1-3 years directly related work experience;
• Experience making nutritional meals, and working with tenants to improve food security;
• Experience working with women and gender diverse people in crisis and those who have experienced trauma, homelessness and substance use;
• Communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills;
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task in a busy environment.
