Work Arrangements

The Music Department in the Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts is seeking to hire a regular probationary faculty member to direct instrumental ensembles and teach individual lessons depending on specialization. The successful candidate will be qualified to teach one of the following packages:

Package 1:
Concert Band (MUSC 1130)
Jazz Ensemble (MUSC 1137)
Contemporary Instrumental Improvisation (MUSC 1114)
Beginning Instrumental Ensemble (MUSC 1135)

Package 2:
Concert Band (MUSC 1130)
Beginning Instrumental Ensemble (MUSC 1135)
Percussion Ensemble (MUSC 1184)

Package 3:
Jazz Ensemble (MUSC 1137)
Contemporary Instrumental Improvisation (MUSC 1114)
Beginning Instrumental Ensemble (MUSC 1135)
Percussion Ensemble (MUSC 1184)

Package 4:
Jazz Ensemble (MUSC 1137)
Contemporary Instrumental Improvisation (MUSC 1114)
Beginning Instrumental Ensemble (MUSC 1135)
Guitar Ensemble (MUSC 1185)

Each package is a minimum of 50% workload. In addition, the successful candidate might also be able to teach individual lessons and other courses for which they are qualified, in which case the workload would increase accordingly.

Workload is assigned each year based on available sections.

The Role

Regular Probationary Faculty - Instrumental Ensembles and Studio Instruction
Responsibilities

The successful candidate will
- conduct ensembles and give lessons and studio classes to students in the department's credential programs, as well as students registered in the Community Music School;
- plan, organize, and manage learning activities and maintain quality learner-centred instruction;
- assess and evaluate students' progress and achievement;
- participate in the student admission process, including hearing auditions and conducting interviews;
- participate in curriculum development and maintain currency of instrumental ensemble courses;
- direct the organization of the instrumental score library and manage the instrument collection related to their specialty;
-maintain the community profile of the instrumental ensembles;
-engage in outreach and student recruitment;
- attend meetings, share in departmental responsibilities, and participate in committee work; and
- maintain currency in the field through professional development activity.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

- a minimum of a Master's degree in Music (Doctoral preferred);
- a strong performance profile and excellent musicianship;
- a demonstrated ability to teach across a variety of musical styles;
- extensive knowledge of instrumental ensemble repertoire and pedagogy;
- a record of successful teaching and recruitment at the post-secondary level;
- experience with curriculum development and revision an asset;
- a demonstrated ability to work with a population of diverse adult learners;
- a strong commitment to maintaining and growing enrolment in ensembles;

- a commitment to Department and College service;
- excellent communication skills, demonstrated initiative and creativity, effective interpersonal skills, and self-directedness;
- evidence of ongoing professional development.

We will be holding in-person teaching demonstrations the week of November 14, 2022. We anticipate holding interviews in late November and early December.
