The North Okanagan Friendship Center Society (NOFCS) is seeking a compassionate, culturally grounded
Registered Social Worker (RSW)
to support Indigenous men, fathers, and families affected by Gender-Based Violence (GBV), trauma, and intergenerational impacts of colonization. This new position reflects NOFCS's commitment to advancing culturally safe, trauma-informed, and clinically supported services for Indigenous Peoples across the North Okanagan. The RSW will provide direct therapeutic support, case management, advocacy, and system navigation, integrating Indigenous worldviews, traditional teachings, and community collaboration.
Direct Client Support and Case Management
Provide individual and group counselling, assessments, and case management through a trauma-informed and culturally safe approach.
Utilize therapeutic modalities (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing) within an Indigenous lens.
Conduct formal assessments to identify client strengths, risks, and needs using appropriate clinical tools.
Develop and implement individualized care and safety plans in collaboration with clients.
Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support as needed.
Program Development and Facilitation
Lead and facilitate men's and fathers' healing sessions, such as Men's Circles, Anger Management, and Mental Health and Addictions groups
Embed Indigenous teachings, language, and ceremony within programming to foster connection, accountability, and healing.
Develop culturally grounded group curricula and resources for participants and families.
Community Collaboration and Advocacy
Liaise and coordinate with community partners including MCFD, Interior Health, Okanagan Indian Band, Turning Points Collaborative, and justice services to ensure holistic client support.
Advocate for clients within systems such as child welfare, housing, legal, and health care.
Participate in community outreach and represent NOFCS at inter-agency meetings and collaborations.
Clinical and Administrative Duties
Ensure adherence to ethical, professional, and legal standards consistent with the BC College of Social Workers (BCCSW) and NOFCS policies.
Provide clinical consultation and mentorship to team members as appropriate.
Participate in supervision and ongoing professional development to maintain registration and clinical competence.
Track outcomes, prepare reports, and contribute to program evaluation.
Involved and supports all staff, programing, and clients receiving services from the NOFCS.
Qualifications and Requirements
Bachelor's or master's degree in social work from an accredited university.
Registered and in good standing with the BC College of Social Workers (RSW required).
Minimum three (3) years of related experience in social work, counselling, or Indigenous community services.
Register with the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and meet the FNHA specific criteria, including professional licensing, a master's degree or equivalent, with at least five years of counseling experience (three of which are with First Nations people), and completion of an Indigenous Cultural Safety Training course.
Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous history, culture, values, and the impacts of colonization and intergenerational trauma.
Knowledge of Gender-Based Violence, family systems, addiction recovery, and trauma-informed practice.
Experience working with Indigenous men, fathers, and families in healing or restorative justice contexts is an asset.
Strong communication, facilitation, and advocacy skills.
Proficient in maintaining confidentiality, documentation, and ethical standards per BC Employment and Labour Regulations.
Valid Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector clearance required prior to employment.
Working Conditions
Full-time permanent position based at the North Okanagan Friendship Center in Vernon, BC.
Combination of office-based, community-based, and outreach work.
Flexible scheduling may include some evenings or weekends to accommodate client needs and community events.
Salary and Benefits
Reporting to the Executive Director.
Annual salary: $70,000 - $82,000, based on qualifications and experience.
Comprehensive benefits package, including extended health, dental, and vision coverage.
RRSP contribution and three (3) weeks paid vacation per year.
Professional development and registration renewal support.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Friday; some evenings/weekends as required)
