About the Role:
Reporting to the Executive Director, Student Wellness & Accessibility Centre, the Registered Practical Nurse provides care and treatment of health conditions by supportive, preventive, and therapeutic means for stable, less complex clients with more predictable outcomes, as part of a multi-disciplinary health-care team.
The Registered Nurse will:
Recognize changes, probe further, and if unable to manage consult with RN or MD;
Transfer knowledge from similar situations through pattern recognition, analysis of available information and assessment of a known range of options to solve problems;
Work in consultation with RNs and others to meet the care needs of more complex clients;
Develop a plan of care for clients when overall care needs are less complex, where the risk of negative outcomes is low and where outcomes are predictable;
Gather intake information, vital signs etc. in preparation for the physician;
Recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergency situations;
Administer medications and vaccines as ordered;
Deliver elements of established health programs;
Provide general health and wellness education to clients and explain medical terminology and conditions to patients;
Explain physician's instructions to patients and provide information handouts;
Ensure exam rooms are prepped before each patient visit and that adequate supplies are available in exam rooms;
Monitor and ensure infection control procedures are carried out through the principles of infection control and universal precautions;
Monitor the patient flow of booked and walk-in clients;
Ensure test specimens are properly labelled and that requisitions are completed and sent to the lab for processing.
Key Skills and Experience:
College diploma in Practical Nursing (two-year diploma);
Current RPN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
CPR certified;
Mask fit tested;
A minimum of four years of registered practical nurse experience in a clinical or outpatient setting;
Basic knowledge of disease processes, human physiology, medical technology and treatment, medication management and patient assessment;
Knowledge of medical interventions, such as test procedures, laboratory values, dressings, Student Health Services, office and University policies, procedures and systems;
Knowledge of health subjects relevant to the student population, such as stress management, mental illness, suicide, sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, eating disorders, disease management, substance abuse, rape/sexual abuse, and stress management;
Knowledge and ability to use PS Suite -Electronic Medical Record;
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to translate medical documentation and terms for a non-medical audience;
Ability to build trust quickly with individuals and influence behaviour;
Ability to make decisions based on the analysis of available information and by accessing a known range of options to solve problems;
Ability to assess the risk of exposure to, and transmission of, infectious agents in every nurse-client situation, including protective barriers, sharps, care of equipment, acute febrile illness, TB, Meningitis, and Influenza.
Preferred or Asset Skills:
Ability to give immunizations.
Salary and Total Rewards:
Job Grade J, Salary Scale ($56,503-$91,627);
Target Hiring Range: $56,503-$58,000

The final salary is based on experience, internal equity, and budget considerations within the target hiring range.*
