Position Summary:



The Registered Practical Nurse provides professional care to residents, and directs and supervises nursing care given by Health Care Aides and Nursing Attendants within an assigned unit. The RPN charge nurse is required to plan, direct and coordinate all activities necessary for the management of the unit. The RPN charge nurse shall work closely with the Director of Care, RN and other members of the multi disciplinary team. Access to a Registered Nurse is always available within the building while on shift. These duties and responsibilities shall be conducted in accordance with policies, procedures and work routines of the facility, always respecting residents' rights.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



Within the established mission and vision statement, policies of the corporation, and the realm of practice as set forth by the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Registered Practical Nurse will:

a. dispense and administer medications:

receive, transcribe and double check all doctors' orders;

order, receive, check and store for safekeeping all medication and narcotics;

prepare and maintain medication Administration Record (MAR) sheets;

b. provide nursing care in accordance with administrative policies, physicians' orders, established standards and recognized nursing practices:

assess resident's condition through recognizing and interpreting symptoms and signs and where appropriate instituting remedial health measures;

provide a holistic quality approach to resident care;

be professionally responsible for the nursing care of all residents on the unit;

assist physician in diagnostic and therapeutic measures;

observe, report and record symptoms and conditions of residents;

maintain accurate and complete records of nursing observations and care;

develop and maintain up-to-date resident care plans and summaries;

co-ordinate and facilitate timely care conferences as assigned;

complete incident/accident reports as necessary;

c. assist in maintaining a physical and psycho-social environment which meets the needs of residents:

assist in health teaching to staff and residents;

assume responsibility for proper care of equipment used in providing care to

residents;

assist in maintaining adequate standards of cleanliness.

d. promote good understanding and team work between registered and unregulated staff;

e. ensure appropriate response to all resident calls as required;

f. present in the dining room during meal service to ensure an optimum dining experience for the residents;

g. adhere to all policies and procedures pertaining to the operation of the facility in regard to: infection control; health and safety; personnel practices internal and external emergencies; residents' rights; confidentiality;

h. work in a safe manner by: promptly reporting accidents/illness; seeking out first aid when appropriate; cooperating in health care treatment; cooperating in all aspects of the facility's modified work program; reporting all unsafe or unhealthy conditions;

i. participate in staff meetings, committees, and in-service education designated by the Director of Care;

j. interact tactfully and courteously with residents, residents' family, visitors and fellow staff;

k.. address family concerns in a timely fashion;

l.. perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications Required:



a. RPN with current and active registration with College of Nurses of Ontario;

Qualification Desired:



a. previous experience in geriatric nursing;

b. completion of a course in geriatrics;

c. able to communicate in Dutch as well as English.

Part Time positions available

Pay: $29.38-$32.83 per hour
