The Operating Room at TGH is comprised of 21 Operating Theatres as well as the Multi Purpose OR (MPOR) a Translational Research Image Guided OR (TRIGOR) and Organ Regenerative Laboratory (ORL) and encompasses a wide variety of surgical services including Cardiovascular, Thoracic, General Surgery, Gyne Oncology, Urology, Head and Neck and Plastics. There is also a Robotic program in some of the specialties. Priority program includes Cardiovascular, Surgical Oncology and Transplantation. There is an ECHMO program to support patients with ARLS as well as VAD program; Minimally Invasive Surgery and Living Related Donor program.
Every Operating Room is equipped with a computer where nurses can retrieve web-based resources and document their perioperative nursing care. The majority of patients are adults requiring surgery on the inpatient or outpatient basis. Many of our patients are highly acute and have complex conditions ( transplant, cardiovascular and surgical oncology).

In accordance with relevant legislation and the standards established by the College of Nurses of Ontario the principal responsibilities of the REGISTERED PRACTICAL NURSE include: contributing to the patient assessment process; implementing patient care plan that include performing and/or providing assistance that include a limited range of strategies and interventions, collaborating with other members of the multi-disciplinary health care team; acting as patient advocate; contributing to the smooth functioning of the department; attending seminars and workshops to facilitate personal and professional growth; performs the duties of the scrub nurse consistent with the job description as assigned; performing other duties consistent with the job classification as assigned.
