Nurses who are part of the RPN Team will be expected to provide care to patients in several disease site groups: providing a broad range of ambulatory oncology nursing care services for cancer patients and their families in the clinical environment. Performing all aspects of patient care processes prescribed by physicians &/or Nurse Practitioners in compliance with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and the Division of Oncology Nursing. Nursing responsibilities include comprehensive health assessment, development of supportive & therapeutic patient & family relationships, management of cancer symptoms & treatment side effects, teaching & coaching, facilitating continuity of care & navigation of the health care system, and support with clinical decision making & patient advocacy. The Odette ambulatory oncology RPN is expected to engage in continuous quality improvement initiatives, leadership opportunities, and on-going professional development.
The RPN will collaborate with the interprofessional team in the management of oncology patients and their families throughout the trajectory of their cancer care to help address and manage physical, emotional, practical, psychological, informational, social, and spiritual needs. The RPN is accountable for the provision of compassionate and high quality nursing care through the use of evidence-based nursing interventions in compliance with oncology nursing competencies and CNO Standards of Practice.
Any nurse hired in to this position will have the added duties of assisting the physicians in performing a variety of outpatient procedures. This will include, but is not limited to, Bone Marrow Aspirations, Lumbar Punctures, and minor excisional skin procedures. The nurse will be responsible for the on-going assessment and care of the patient during the procedure and will be expected to provide discharge teaching with patients/families in preparation for discharge home.
Qualifications/Skills
Current registration with the College of Nurse of Ontario
Registered Practical Nurse Diploma
Current B.C.L.S.
Experience in oncology nursing is strongly preferred
Experience in ambulatory care nursing preferred
IV insertion skills an asset
Experience with vascular access devices an asset
Experience in assisting with surgical procedures an asset
Must be flexible, adaptable, and have the ability to prioritize
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills necessary
Computer literacy and typing necessary
