Hours of Work: Full-Time and Part-Time Positions; Rotating Shifts

Rate of Pay: TECH3 $32.32-$37.26 per hour + pension/benefits

About the Role



As a Registered Pharmacy Technician at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), you will play a vital role in delivering safe and effective pharmaceutical services. Working under the guidance of Pharmacy Managers and Supervisors, you will operate within the full scope of practice defined by the Ontario College of Pharmacists and the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA). Your contributions will support patient and family-centered care and align with KHSC's mission, vision, and values.

Key Responsibilities


Core Drug Distribution


Prepare and dispense individual patient drug orders and prescriptions in accordance with hospital policies. Receive, process, and verify drug orders including inpatient, outpatient, and leave of absence prescriptions. Package and compound non-sterile preparations such as suspensions, creams, and ointments. Collaborate with pharmacists to ensure therapeutic reviews and address alerts such as drug interactions. Perform final checks and release of prepared pharmacy products. Maintain documentation and quality control standards.
Pharmaceutical Compounding & Controlled


Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounds, including hazardous preparations, following departmental SOPs and NAPRA standards. Maintain certification and support on-call rotations as required. Manage inventory and distribution of controlled substances in compliance with legislation. Coordinate destruction of controlled drugs and participate in audits.
Inventory & Supply Chain Operations


Order and receive drugs, manage inventory, and support purchasing operations. Restock automated dispensing cabinets, medication refrigerators, carts, and cupboards. Monitor floor stock and rotate inventory to ensure product integrity. Support backorder management and maintain purchasing data in the Pharmacy Information System.
Medication Reconciliation


Compile Best Possible Medication History (BPMH) through patient or family interviews and review of medication sources. Document home medication lists and refer discrepancies to pharmacists for clinical review.
General Responsibilities


Provide technical guidance and training to Pharmacy Assistants, Technician students, and new staff. Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives and departmental committees. Maintain drug storage areas in compliance with safety and cleanliness standards. Adhere to health and safety policies and report hazards or adverse drug events. Support investigational drug services and compassionate medication programs. Perform clerical duties including documentation, recordkeeping, and communication with healthcare professionals.
Qualifications


Completion of a Pharmacy Technician Program meeting CPTEA, NAPRA, and CCAPP standards. Current unrestricted registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists as a Registered Pharmacy Technician. Minimum 4 months of recent experience in hospital or community pharmacy practice. Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Commitment to continuous learning, quality improvement, and patient safety. Understanding of health and safety legislation and ability to maintain a safe work environment. Bilingual in French and English preferred. Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
Physical Requirements
