Position Summary
:
The Coronary Care Unit Nurse (CCU) provides care for patients who are recovering from an acute coronary event and/or a cardiac procedure. The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible to provide complex, intensive patient care utilizing their advanced knowledge, critical thinking, advanced problem solving, leadership, and advocacy and judgment skills. The RN will be proficient in all types of care and procedures related to caring for a CCU patient in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. In keeping with the excellence of care provided within the WRHN @ Queen's Blvd cardiac program, the RN will continuously assess and adapt in an effort to: identify patient / family wishes, prioritize and problem solve, formulate a plan of care, and provide evidenced based interventions to meet the patient's needs. The RN must have the ability to strictly adhere to procedural guidelines and work in an intense, professional, and collaborative environment committed to excellence and quality patient care.
Responsibilities:
Bedside patient care in Coronary Care Unit
Demonstrate therapeutic relationship with patient and/or family
Perform physical head to toe assessments
Cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring
Knowledge of STEMI/NSTEMI recovery including post cardiac catheterization care
Knowledge and experience with
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) recovery
Cardiac pacing including temporary Transcutaneous and/or Transvenous pacemaker interventions and care
Cardioversion
Procedural documentation - concise, accurate and complete
ECG interpretation/understanding of cardiac monitor such as a central station, bedside monitor and/or telemetry
Performs assessment of effectiveness of intervention(s)
Perform conscious sedation with associated monitoring and documentation
Medication Administration
Able to respond to life threatening situations
Knowledge of supplies and proper sterile technique for cardiac procedures and/or bedside interventions
Demonstrates support for patient and family throughout intervention
Communication to all health care providers the plan of care, the assessment, the interventions, patient history and effectiveness of those interventions
Documentation of patient plan of care is in the electronic medical record (EMR)
Documentation of teaching patient/family in EMR

Coordination of repatriation back to sending facilities, which may at times require nurse to go on transport
Answering telephone and coordination of patient transfer within organization

Fulfil need to train/teach new staff members and/or student nurses
Position Requirements:
BScN or equivalent
Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Minimum 3-5 years previous Coronary Care experience within a hospital setting
Minimum of 1-2 years of recent Step-Down and/or Intensive Care experience
Completion of Coronary Care Nursing and/or Critical Care Certificate Course
Current ACLS certification
Level of physical fitness to perform the essential duties of the position which includes standing for long periods of time and pushing/pulling/lifting with proper body mechanics when transferring, lifting, turning or transporting patients
Competency in advanced ECG interpretation, recognizing and interpreting cardiac dysrhythmias
Active certification in Intravenous Therapy and Venipuncture
Collaborative/teamwork ability to work in an interdisciplinary team utilizing excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to assist with patient lifts, transfers, and bed movement, room turnover
Adhere to infection prevention and control instructions for cleaning equipment.
Intellectual abilities needed to perform mental activities (such as logical reasoning, analysis) as per the requirement of the job
Strong problem solving, critical thinking, organizational and prioritization skills.
Good communication skills
Able to handle stress and able to multitask. Flexible and adaptable to new or changing situations
Knowledge of radiation safety
Dedicated commitment to life-long learning and commitment to continually improving their nursing practice by engaging in practice reflection, and by setting and achieving learning goals.
Adhere to Code of Conduct and all other workplace policies, including but not limited to Ethics, Violence and Harassment
Dependable, demonstrated good attendance
Preferred Requirements:
Moderate sedation certification
Advanced Arrhythmia course
12 Lead ECG course
Basic Cardiac Assessment course
Cardiac and/or Coronary Care Certification
Critical Care Certification
Knowledge/use of Lean management tools
