The Opportunity:
The combined PACU and Same Day Care Nurse plays a vital role in providing comprehensive nursing care for patients undergoing same-day surgical procedures and those recovering from anesthesia. This position requires a skilled nurse to provide both preoperative and postoperative care in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The nurse will be responsible for assessing patients, administering medications, monitoring recovery in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and ensuring a smooth transition for patients throughout the surgical process. The role demands excellent critical thinking, patient advocacy, and effective communication skills to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.
Qualifications:
Current Certificate of Registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Minimum of two year of recent critical care nursing experience required
Current BCLS certification required
Current ACLS certification required
PACU Certificate required (or to obtain within 6 months of hire)
Critical Care or Emergency Department Certification required
Excellent nursing assessment, communication, critical thinking, organization, documentation and problem-solving skills
Strong conflict resolution skills when dealing with staff, physicians, patients and family members.
Ability to multi- task and function at a fast pace, while maintaining an adaptable attitude towards any last-minute changes as required during the day
Attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Ability to exercise good judgement in recognizing situations that may require immediate attention of appropriate person/people
Ability to provide educational opportunities for clients and family, other health care providers and health care students
Knowledge of and adherence to Occupational Health and Safety and Infection Control Practices, College of Nurses Standards of Practice, and Health Centre policy and procedures
Knowledge of current NAPAN standards an asset

Duties and Responsibilities:
In this role, the nurse will perform various essential duties, including conducting preoperative assessments, educating patients about the surgical and recovery processes, and preparing them for surgery. In the PACU, the nurse will closely monitor and assess patients recovering from anesthesia, managing vital signs, oxygenation, and pain control. The nurse will intervene as needed for complications and work closely with the surgical and anesthesia teams to ensure a smooth recovery process. Postoperatively, the nurse will assess patients' readiness for discharge by evaluating their vital signs, pain levels, and overall condition, providing essential patient education on aftercare. Additionally, the nurse will work with patients and families to provide guidance on postoperative care, including wound management, medications, and recognizing complications. Throughout both the PACU and Same Day Care settings, the nurse will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contribute to safety protocols, and ensure that patient care standards are met.

days, Evenings, Weekends and Standby (on-call). Please be reminded that as a Hospital, in order to provide the necessary patient care, our operations run 24/7. Therefore, depending on the program for which you are applying, it may be an expectation that you are available to work weekdays and weekends, as well as all shifts - days, evenings, and nights. Regularly scheduled for up to 24 hours per week (48/pay).
Wage:
$39.07 - $56.00 per hour plus applicable shift premiums for evenings, nights and weekends.
