Responsible for the delivery of a broad scope of care and safety to Residents. The RN is accountable for ongoing Clinical Best Practice Guideline assessments and intervention for all residents.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Graduate from an approved school of Nursing (Registered Nurse) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with current practicing registration with the appropriate professional body. Additional preparation in gerontology/geriatric care is preferred.
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, Gerontology certificate and two years recent related experience in Gerontology and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Current First Aid and CPR certificates.

Key Responsibilities:
=========================
Using the nursing process and Best Practice Clinical Guidelines, assesses the needs of each resident, and documents a Plan of Care that organizes the total care of the residents (includes family and/or resident in planning). Ensures that the plan is implemented, and evaluated, according to desired outcomes.
Assumes a multidisciplinary approach to the development of a written care plan for each resident, including nursing needs, approaches to be used by Resident Care Aides (RCA) and other health care workers, in conjunction with the physician's plan of care.
Administers and documents personal care to meet the mental, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the residents.
Utilizes effective social and interpersonal skills with the residents and their families to:
+ Encourage residents interactions,
+ Encourage involvement in activity programs,
+ Respect residents' religious beliefs,
+ Assist in meeting the needs of the dying person and his/her family. Maintains proper infection control, including but is not exclusive to:
+ Washing hands between residents
+ Knowledge of Health Authority's Infection Control policies and protocols,
+ Ensuring effective control within facility and when receiving and transferring residents. Prevents, eliminates, reduces and/or reports safety hazards.
Functions harmoniously within the team environment.
Regularly attends in-services, training programs, and actively participates in multidisciplinary care conferences and staff meetings.
Supports and interprets philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of Full Care to other workers, residents and families.
Supports, directs and instructs the RCA's in the delivery of quality resident care.
Supports and acts as a resource person to all Resident Care staff.
Shares in admission and discharge planning for residents and assures that accurate records are kept.
Ensures that physicians are informed of changes in condition or care of their residents, or concerns from family members.
Promptly advises family members of changes in resident's condition, care requirements, need for equipment, falls, and transfers to hospital.
Consults with and communicates to the Director of Care information on the residents' status and other related matters.
Assists in the collection of data to assist with performance evaluation. Orientates new staff members as requested.
Participates in continuous Quality Improvement (QI) activities e.g. data collection, team meetings, QI programs, Accreditation, etc.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities to Health and Safety
:
Is a competent person as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act?
Is knowledgeable of supervisors' responsibilities, and follows all health and safety policies and procedures.
Monitors adherence to safety policies and procedures of all employees, and promotes safe work practices for self and others.
Is alert to, remedies, or promptly reports all actual or potential hazardous situations to the appropriate personnel, i.e. maintenance, owners.
Ensures workers under your supervision have the appropriate personal protective equipment, which is being used properly, regularly inspected, and maintained.
Resident Safety:
+ Provides personal and environmental interventions to ensure residents are protected from injury
+ Follows instructions for safety as stated on the care plan; Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and Care Standards Manual e.g. Mobilizing, transferring, and positioning residents; knowing and implementing emergency procedures as required; Preventing infection; practicing safe feeding techniques; practicing personal care; promoting a safe environment such as safety of equipment and safety of work areas.
