Position Summary
:
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Diagnostic Assessment Programs (DAP) supports patient through their lung diagnostic journey. This position involves providing care to eligible patients with indwelling pleural catheters and collaborating as a key member of an interdisciplinary team. The RN engages in the comprehensive review of incoming referrals, conducts assessments, manages symptoms, and delivers emotional support and patient education through both phone and in-person interactions.
Additionally, the RN advocates for timely patient appointments in alignment with Cancer Care Ontario targets, ensuring patients receive prompt access to care. Acting as a primary contact and navigator, the RN facilitates referrals and linkages within the cancer centre, Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) and the patient's home community. The RN also contributes to the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of activities within the Regional Cancer Program, supporting educational initiatives, provincial navigation groups, and research activities. The RN will provide coverage for programs; Malignant Pleural Effusion Clinic and Thoracic Diagnostic Assessment Programs, which involve in-person ambulatory clinics. Overall, the RN in the DAP program is instrumental in delivering high-quality care and support to patients, enhancing their healthcare experience while collaborating with an exceptional team of professionals.
Position Requirements:
Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
3 or more years' experience in Oncology nursing is required
deSouza Foundations of Oncology Nursing Practice or equivalent oncology certification is required, or presently enrolled in
deSouza Nurse Navigation Certification Program is recommended
Canadian Nurses Association certification as a Certified Oncology Nurse (CONC) or commitment to complete CONC in a timely manner
Proven ability to work independently and within the multidisciplinary team
Working with a variety of computer systems and software applications; proficiency with Cerner, MS Office, including Excel
Participation in education and clinical training programs
Experience in telephone nursing support
Excellent communication skills
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Knowledge of the current Waterloo Wellington regional cancer care system and the Ontario Health Cancer Care Ontario Diagnostic Assessment Program an asset
Good attendance record
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of:
+ Oncologic disease processes
+ Patient assessment
+ Principles of adult learning
+ Needs of the oncology patient population and patient focused care
+ Case coordination within the Cancer Centre, WRHN and community agencies
+ Empathy with patients and family members
+ Therapeutic communication techniques
+ Principles of continuous quality improvement
