UNIT SUMMARY
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10-bed state-of-the-art critical care unit designed to meet the needs of our patients and families. Our Department provides comprehensive services for a wide variety of critically ill medical and surgical patients with acute, life-threatening disease and injury.
The PICU provides intensive care for a wide range of complex, rapidly changing medical, surgical and traumatic disorders occurring in pediatric patients aged 18 and under. Areas of subspecialty care includes congenital heart disease, cardiovascular surgery, respiratory failure, neurosurgery. immunodeficiencies, hematologic and oncologic emergencies, sepsis, and multi-organ system dysfunction. Available advanced treatment modalities include cardiovascular surgery (neonatal, pediatric, and cardiac ECMO), high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, non-invasive ventilation, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
POSITION SUMMARY
CHEO provides a 20-week orientation and support period to ensure a smooth transition in to practice on the unit.
In keeping with the mission statement of the hospital and the patient service unit, the nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for individual patients/families.Effectively uses the nursing process
Practices according to the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Hospital, and the patient service unit
Provides appropriate learning experiences for the patient and family to promote or maintain wellness, and to achieve an optimal quality of life
Is accountable for maintaining competence while developing the quality of his/ her professional nursing practice
QUALIFICATIONSVulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Essential)
Current CPR Certification (Essential)
Paediatric acute care experience (minimum 2 years) OR critical care experience (minimum 2 years) (Essential)
Critical Care experience with the ability to care for Hemodynamically unstable and ventilated patients (Preferred)
Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills (Essential)
Demonstrated culturally sensitive approach to nursing care (Essential)
Demonstrated strong family centered care skills (Essential)
Bilingual (English/ French) (Preferred)
Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing (Preferred)
Critical Care courses and Certification or other appropriate combination of education and experience (Preferred)
Current PALS certification OR successful completion of PALS certification within 12 months of hire (Essential)

L'Unite pediatrique des soins intensifs (UPSI) est une unite de soins intensifs de 10 lits concue pour repondre aux besoins de nos patients et de nos familles. Notre service offre des services medicaux et chirurgicaux complets a une grande variete de patients gravement malades presentant des maladies et des blessures graves et potentiellement mortelles.
L'UPSI offre des soins intensifs pour une vaste gamme de troubles medicaux, chirurgicaux, traumatiques complexes evoluant rapidement qui surviennent chez les patients pediatriques ages de 18 ans et moins. Les domaines de soins de sous-specialite comprennent les maladies cardiaques congenitales, la chirurgie cardiovasculaire, l'insuffisance respiratoire, la neurochirurgie, les immunodeficiences, les urgences hematologiques et oncologiques, la septicemie et le dysfonctionnement systemique de plusieurs organes. Les modalites de traitement avancees disponibles comprennent la chirurgie cardiovasculaire (ECMO neonatal, pediatrique et cardiaque), la ventilation a haute frequence, le traitement au moyen de l'oxyde nitrique, la ventilation non invasive et l'oxygenotherapie hyperbarique.
