The Operating Room Nurse is a member of the health care team providing peri-operative care to the surgical patient in accordance to ORNAC and AORN standards and QEH policy and procedures. The peri-operative nurse functions as a team member and works collaboratively with other disciplines within the Surgical Suite.

The peri-operative nurse:



provides direct patient care in a number of roles in the O.R; (circulator and scrub roles); plays an important role as a patient advocate and responding to patient questions; provides emotional support to the patient and their family; monitors and maintains aseptic principles/techniques; adheres to policies and protocols related to infection control; assists with the coordination of supplies and equipment and instrument counts for surgical procedures; assists P.A.C.U. nurse in caring for patients in the P.A.C.U. assists with the orientation and/or preceptoring of new staff and students; completes patient documentation; performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:



active or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island; successful completion of peri-operative course supplemented with previous OR experience is required; must have demonstrated strong leadership, organizational, problem-solving, assessment, communication skills, and be knowledgeable about operative procedures; must have a good previous work and attendance record; the successful candidate will be on call and must be able to arrive at the hospital within 15 minutes after receiving a call-back; if there are no qualified candidates, consideration may be given to individuals who are willing to be trained by the employer to meet the minimum qualifications. A return-in-service of two years will be expected by the employer in exchange for training; the successful applicant must provide a satisfactory criminal record check prior to beginning employment.

Other Qualifications:



critical care nursing experience, PSC, PACU and Day Surgery experience would be considered assets; recent pre/post-surgical and acute care experience is an asset; additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.

External candidates may be eligible to receive a $8,000 Nursing Incentive, plus a $5,000 Rural or $8,000 Student Loan Incentive depending on location of employment. To be eligible for recruitment incentives candidates must hold a 1.0 FTE, this can be a full-time role or a combination of part-time positions. Relocation Assistance may be available to part or full-time candidates.



Salary Range:

$38.90- $47.47 per hour

Bi-Weekly Hours:

75.0 hours Bi-weekly / Monday-Friday Days, Evenings, Weekends, Call as per Schedule
