Job Description


Registered Nurse (RN) are health care professionals who care for stable surgical patients under supervision and immediate availability of an anesthesiologist.
The RN will provide technical and clinical assistance to the anesthesiologist. This will include assistance in the block room, Interventional Pain Clinic and with the Acute Pain Service. The scope of practice of the RN is defined by their own professional standards of care of the Royal Victoria Regional Heath Centre, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and all relevant legislation.
Assisting the attending anesthesiologist with:

  • Establishment of central venous access
  • Initiation of invasive physiologic monitoring modalities
  • Application, and interpretation of data from routine and advanced monitoring techniques (arrhythmia interpretation)
  • Initiation and maintenance of regional blocks and catheters
  • Establishment of epidural
  • Assist with spinal as delegated by the responsible anesthesiologist
Under supervision and immediate availability of an anesthesiologist:
  • Monitoring and maintenance of sedation in a stable, uncomplicated patient for short periods of time as per CNO Guidelines
  • Administering blood and blood products
  • Administering pharmaceutical agents by way of bolus, regulated pumped infusions
  • Monitoring effectiveness and unfavorable outcomes of the epidural - LAST, Intrathecal injection, and hypotension
  • Assist with the clinical instruction of others
  • Assist initial resuscitation in life- threatening situations according to established protocols while awaiting the arrival of the supervising anesthesiologist
  • Provide pre-operative pain assessments and post-operative pain management assessment, as well as patient education in respect to pain management. May alter pain management within the parameters of an established medical directive
  • Perform an assessment of the patient's health status for surgical plan
  • Establish peripheral venous access
  • Phlebotomy skills/ ISTAT and glucometer certified

Qualifications:
Education:
  • BCLS Certificate within one (1) year essential
  • Life Saving Drugs/Defib (1) year essential
  • Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Competence essential
  • ACLS mandatory
  • Post Diploma Education in Basic Arrhythmia's and Blocks essential
  • Post Diploma Education, Patient Assessment essential
  • Post Diploma Education in Twelve Lead ECG an asset
  • Basic Computer skills
Experience:
  • Surgical nursing experience essential
  • Critical Care/Emergency nursing experience essential
  • Geriatric Nursing experience an asset
  • Ability and experience demonstrated through positive performance appraisals and work history
  • Must be able to perform all essential duties of position description, which includes the ability to lift and move patients, pushing, pulling, bending and stooping
  • Function within the Health and Safety guideline providing safe and supportive environment for all patients

  • Ability to work in a team setting that is fast paced
  • Flexibility to accommodate changing workloads
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively using both oral and written format with patients, public and colleagues and member of multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrate excellent problem solving, critical thinking and organizational skills
  • Has excellent attendance record
