Your Opportunity:
The Public Health Nurse (PHN) is a key position working in partnership with a multidisciplinary team. The PHN collaborates with community stakeholders to provide integrated, strength-based, family-centered care in various settings. This generalist role includes providing services across both the Healthy School program and Healthy Young Families (HYF) program, with responsibilities assigned based on operational need. Nursing services include universal public health care such as antenatal/prenatal education, routine postnatal care, health assessments, counseling, screening, immunization, follow-up, referral, linkage, advocacy, consultation, and teaching. The PHN delivers care across the lifespan, working with infants, children, adolescents, families, adults, and seniors. Within the School Health program, the PHN provides school-based immunization, health education, and consultation services, working closely with students, school staff, and families to promote child and adolescent well-being. Within the Healthy Young Families program, the PHN supports early childhood and family health, including well-child assessments, parent education, and community outreach. This position requires travel between public health centers and school sites, including transporting supplies, setting up immunization clinics, and working in various school environments. Physical demands may include packing, lifting, and transporting heavy or awkward supplies, walking several blocks, climbing stairs, and prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and bending. This position also requires adherence to proper hand hygiene techniques, including regular use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer and antibacterial soap. The PHN will support public health centers in Leduc, Beaumont, Thorsby, and Devon, with responsibilities assigned based on operational requirements.
Description:
As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0) Additional Required Qualifications:
Must have at least 1 year experience within a Healthy School program, and 2 years of experience in the last 5 years within a public health setting, including direct work in early childhood (Healthy Young Families) and school health programs (e.g., school-based immunization, health promotion, or adolescent health support). Fully trained within Connect Care with the required Public Health Nurse role and training. Including recent experience (within the past two years) working with an EMR (e.g., eClinician, Connect Care) required. Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including: Lifting, carrying, and transporting supplies up to [25 lbs], Walking between sites, climbing stairs, and prolonged periods of standing/sitting, Setting up and dismantling mobile immunization/clinic stations. Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle required. Ability to be self-directed and to exercise independent nursing judgment required. Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills required. Experience in interdisciplinary teamwork required. Strong analytical, critical thinking, decision-making, and organizational skills required. Working knowledge of computer applications, including word processing, email, internet access, and data entry required. Preferred Qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree and/or master's in nursing preferred. Skills & experience relevant to nursing practice in community sector will be considered. Knowledge, understanding & demonstrated use of the social determinants of health and health promotion. CNA Certification in Community Health Nursing and/or IBLC certification.
