Your Opportunity:
Generalist Public Health Nurse, based in or out of the Hinton Public Health office, is Primary Care Alberta's frontline representative in delivering public health services in the diverse communities of the North Zone. The Public Health Nurse (PHN) is a key member of the team, you will contribute to the delivery of immunizations and health services to diverse populations, including infants, children under five, and their families, working in partnership with a multidisciplinary team and community stakeholders. The incumbent will: effectively use the nursing process to deliver quality care; provide safe, ethical and patient/family centered health care; independently provide health assessment, health planning, health education, supportive counseling, preventative and screening measures, referrals, and evaluation as appropriate. The PHN provides services to individuals, families, groups, and communities with attention to diversity and the social determinants of health. Duties include but are not limited to the generalist role of public health nursing. Provision of universal Public Health services includes immunization for all age groups, influenza program delivery, and health promotion initiatives. Communicable Disease Control - outbreak management, notifiable disease follow-up. Maternal/Infant Health includes postpartum support, lactation education, prenatal education, and high-risk assessment of mother, babies, and families in the home environment. Sexual and Reproductive Health - will be required to provide STI test and treat, contraception support, pregnancy testing and education in schools and communities. As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $39.58 /hour - $54.16/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

Additional Required Qualifications:

Strong communication (oral & written), organizational, decision making and critical thinking skills are essential, along with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft computer applications including Word, Outlook, and data entry. Recent experience (within the past two years) working in Connect Care (CC), Netcare and previous Meditech. Must be able to perform within established program parameters. Experience in administering injections or immunizations, whether through clinical placements or employment required. Experience working with infants, young children, and families is highly valued. Must be able to work in a loud, chaotic, busy environment. Ability to walk 3-4 blocks at a time while carrying, pushing, pulling 50 lbs. of equipment, climb 4 flights of stairs while carrying 50 lbs. of equipment, carry out awkward and repetitive movements for an entire 8-hour shift, sitting, standing, reaching and/or bending for long periods of time. Will be required to document in CC continuously throughout the day. Be able to comply with appropriate hand hygiene techniques, including regular use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer and antibacterial soap. Candidates must demonstrate adaptability, professionalism, and a commitment to public health principles.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Connect Care and other electronic health record systems is an asset. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working within a public health nursing unit. Recent nursing experience including prenatal, labour & delivery, postpartum or working with young families or the pediatric population preferred. Maternal/newborn certifications such as breastfeeding courses and childbirth education. Familiarity with culturally safe care practices is also beneficial.
