The Registered Nurse serve as the primary medical authority for the Plasma Centre. They evaluate each donor's suitability and release donors for donations, provide counseling for donors, inform donors in case of positive test results (in which no indefinite deferral is in place), and provide medical aid in case of adverse reactions. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the medical evaluation of potential donors for plasmapheresis procedures. The Registered Nurse should confirm donor suitability in a timely manner, and consulting with center physician as needed. Registered Nurse's should provide limited emergency care including the administration of any medications or treatments in accordance with him/her certification, medical directives, applicable training, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Deal with donor reactions, defer donors, and be aware of Grifols deferral criteria, responsible for reception staff, donation staff, donor screener and donor screener supervisor.
The Medical Team Manager oversees all Medical department staff.
Position Objective:
To ensure that all donors meet the requirements for donating plasma in Grifols' plasma collection centres in Canada, and that their safety and comfort are prioritized during the entire donation process.
Position Responsibilities:
1. Comply with federal, provincial, local, and company-specific requirements related to the quality of products, employee, and donor safety when performing the day-to-day activities.
2. Perform donor screening and suitability assessment for second time donors and qualified donors (no active deferrals on file) as well as recruitment of donors into the CMV hyperimmune program.
3. Evaluate donors' understanding based on provided documentation such as consent form to plasmapheresis, AIDS/ HIV, HCV, HBV and CJD educational material and confidential self-exclusion. Ensure the donors agree to undergo a confidential medical history interview, a physical examination (if required), and blood testing.
4. Review donor questionnaires in their entirety when required.
5. Provide counseling regarding donor safety and care by educating donors on what to do to be healthy donors.
6. Promote donor satisfaction through appropriate interaction and responsiveness to donors' needs and questions.
7. Refer to the responsible Centre Physician when in need of providing unacceptable findings to donors, problem solving, or guidance concerning medical or technical issues, including donor safety and eligibility. Maintain communication logs regarding any communications with the licensed physician regarding donor suitability.
8. Evaluate and manage donor reaction(s), which occurs at the facility as outlined in the SOPs. Perform emergency medical procedures in case of donor serious adverse reactions.
9. Review all normal and abnormal test results and determine continued donor eligibility in a timely manner.
10. Inform and counsel donors with abnormal test results. Notify public health authorities as per applicable SOPs when required.
11. Assist in performing Post Donation Information and lookback.
12. Monitor and evaluate operation and provide general feedback to the Centre Physician.
13. Demonstrate continued competency in the performance of job responsibilities and complete periodic assessment with the Center Physician per applicable policies.
14. Manage Donation and Reception department including Donor Screener and Donor Screener Supervisor, including staff management and daily operations performed in a professional functionality scope.
15. Perform periodic re-assessments regarding all Donor Screener responsibilities including obtaining vital signs, hematocrit and total protein assessment, arm assessment, and overall qualified donor eligibility to continue as a Donor Screener/ Donor Screener Supervisor.
16. Responsible for ensuring that the staff involved in the total protein proficiency testing program is fully trained and conducting the required testing within applicable timeframes. The tests results must be signed by the Physician Substitute.
17. Attend monthly staff meetings regularly when required.
18. Must address all observations identified by the Quality Department.
19. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
20. May be required to substitute at reception, screening stations and in the donation hall.
21. May be required to provide training/guidance to Reception Staff, Donor Screeners, and Donor Screener Supervisors .
22. Perform physical examinations when required
23. Perform donor screening and suitability assessment for all donors: applicant donors, qualified donors with active deferral or requires physician examination, and lapsed donors
24. Train and provide guidance regarding technical and medical procedures to the Donation and Reception Staff including Donor Screener, Donor Screener Supervisor.
25. Perform assessment of practical training for obtaining vital signs, hematocrit, total protein assessment, arm assessment, and overall qualified donor eligibility for Donor Screener/ Donor Screener Supervisor positions.

The training and training assessment activities can be performed either in the employee's primary job location or any other Grifols location.

Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
NOTE: All positions are to perform activities within the scope of their regulated designation.
1. A Nurse including Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurses or Paramedic with an active license in the operating province in Canada.
2. At least 2 years of experience with general medical procedures, including emergency medical aid.
3. Excellent bed-side manners.
4. Meticulous in following guidelines, documentation and record keeping.
5. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills required. Must have legible handwriting. Must be able to use PC.
NOTE:
A documented evaluation must be completed by the Medical Team Manager and approved by the Physician/ Responsible Physician upon completion of initial training.
