Job Description


The OpportunityReporting to the Manager of Ambulatory Surgical Care within the Children\'s Health Program, the Registered Nurse (RN) works independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team, providing care for children and their families in accordance with IWK Health philosophy, vision and mission statements. The RN provides holistic, individualized, coordinated, evidence-based care using the nursing process in an ambulatory setting. Using nursing knowledge, critical thinking and clinical judgement, the RN assists with health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, support, and education with the child and family.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Accurately assesses patient/family needs during clinic visits and during telephone consultations and develops an individualized plan; and continuously evaluates the plan of care, making revisions as necessary.
  • Uses the Nursing Process to full scope during Nurse-led clinics.
  • Coordinates care for a designated patient population; acts as a clinical resource to staff regarding patient care issues.
  • Monitors and evaluates clinical care standards and offers input for changes as appropriate.
  • Maintains a database for complex airway patients and takes responsibility for updating the plan of care for this specialized patient population.
  • Acts as a resource for other health care providers in coordinating the care of tracheostomy patients.
  • Regularly performs preop assessments and provides preop teaching for surgical candidates.
  • Precepts 4th year nursing students in the ambulatory care setting.
  • Participates in the Care Team Meetings.
  • Chairs the MOM Committee meetings.
  • Participates in and promotes evidence-based practice and research projects.
  • In collaboration with the Clinical Leader, and other members of the Team, identifies issues that have potential or possible impact on clinical care; demonstrates effective decision-making; and utilizes problem-solving skills.
Hours of WorkMonday - Friday; 0800 - 1600, 9 shifts/ 2 week period.Your Qualifications
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Nursing required (candidates with commensurate experience and education will be considered).
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered, with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent (within the last five years) pediatric surgical nursing experience required.
  • Recent (within the last five years) experience with the care of tracheostomy patients required.
  • Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate, required.
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively within an interprofessional team and to work independently.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Demonstrates commitment to professional development and practice required.
  • Demonstrates effective communication (verbal & written), interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to take initiative.
  • Demonstrates nursing assessment and teaching skills.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to Family Centered Care.
  • Demonstrates excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, ability to prioritize and take initiative.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain internal and external partnership.
  • Familiarity with community services, programs and processes for children and youth with complex airway needs preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and competency in with Meditech/PCI an asset
  • Competency in other languages considered an asset.
