Your Opportunity:
The Edmonton Medical Genetics Clinic, is a multidisciplinary service, providing diagnostic assessment, follow up and treatment of children and adults with, or at high risk for complex metabolic conditions. Under the supervision and guidance of the manager and metabolic team, this part-time Registered Nurse position has responsibilities including but not exclusive to providing nursing assessments, education and teaching, coordination of hospital and community treatment services to children, families and adults living with complex metabolic conditions, telephone counselling as well as 1:1 counselling. The Medical Genetics Clinic has a strong interdisciplinary team which necessitates regular collaboration and consultation to ensure coordinated, comprehensive and patient and family centered care. Roles for a Registered Nurse in metabolic clinics: Coordination of genetic testing (large volume); Filling out laboratory requisitions (providing clinical information relevant for testing); Faxing all paperwork to Calgary MDL to initiate sample send out; Ensuring samples were received by the laboratory and confirming turnaround time for results; Buccal or urine sample collections; Coordination of biopsies; Prep requisitions for clinic; Chart review to ensure all actions completed (referrals made, tests ordered); Organizing newborn letter and blood spot card for parents to give health providers regarding increased risk to child; Coordination and paperwork for fructose challenges; Finger poke teaching for blood spot testing; Following protocols (BH4) and providing patient guidance; Provide guidance to patients for medication administration (Biotin, carnitine); Multi-Disciplinary organization for complex investigations.
Description:
As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $39.58 - $54.16 per hour. Upon obtaining a full licence, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 5 years pediatric and adult experience, preferably including ambulatory clinic experience. The ability to balance numerous demands and conflicting priorities is essential. The candidate must be able to work within a team environment and to effectively contribute to patient/client planning processes. Excellent communication skills, a compassionate and caring attitude, and attention to detail are necessary. Working experience with Microsoft office, email, and AHS computer systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of CVC is an asset. Expertise in clinical patient education/counselling is preferred. As patients with rare metabolic conditions are complex, knowledge of genetics and metabolic conditions, or knowledge of complex disorders that can be transferred, as well as experience with a highly complex patient population is an asset.
