The Registered Nurse (RN) works alongside a Halton Regional Police Service officer to respond to police-directed calls concerning individuals identified as being in crisis. The main responsibility of the crisis nurse is to deliver immediate mental health/crisis assessment, intervention, and referrals to the appropriate hospital or community resources, as required. The crisis nurse also collaborates with hospital and community resources as necessary. Additionally, the crisis nurse and Police Officer(s) engage in outreach and coordination with community partners and key stakeholders. All services are provided in alignment with the Standards of Practice set by the College of Nurses of Ontario and in accordance with relevant legislation.
This is a joint initiative between Halton Healthcare and the Halton Regional Police Services. This innovative program offers mobile crisis intervention within the service areas of Halton region.
Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a psychiatric emergency setting.
  • Fluency in a second language is an asset.
  • Experience working with individuals with substance use and/or addictions is an asset.
  • Excellent crisis intervention, de-escalation, clinical assessment, supportive counselling skills
  • Exemplary communication skills.
  • Proven ability in problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of and ability to access community resources.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a fast paced, demanding environment.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Ontario Mental Health Act, PHIPA, HCCA.
  • Sound knowledge of the principles of the therapeutic relationship and their application to Crisis Intervention.
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational, time-management skills, and team building skills.
  • Excellent work performance, punctuality, and attendance.
  • Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills.
Please note that eligibility for this position will be conditional upon successful completion and comprehensive review of the preferred candidate's background and approval from the Halton Regional Police Service. Halton Healthcare reserves the right to withdraw an offer of employment for this position should this condition not be met.
Additional Information
Hours: Monday to Friday Days/Evenings, 10 hour shifts (Hours subject to change based on operational requirements)
Salary: $40.24 to $57.68 per hour
