UNIT PROFILE:
The Fracture and Orthopaedic Clinic at St Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton serves a variety of patients suffering from musculoskeletal related conditions such as bone fractures, arthritis, joint replacements, and degenerative diseases.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Nurse Manager of the Fracture and Orthopedic Clinic the Charge Nurse works in a leadership position and is responsible for overseeing the daily activities of the Clinic by planning, directing and coordinating all patient related care. The position requires the Registered Nurse to work with a reasonable degree of independence in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team. The Charge nurse is responsible for ensuring clinic flow, staff schedules and staffing on day-to-day basis, teaching pre-operative total hip/knee class, working in the clinic as a frontline staff and assisting with clerical duties as required. Other duties include triaging referrals, responding to patient and family concerns/questions, investigating and resolving complaints, coordinating with community partners such as Long-term care, LHIN, ICC and involvement in studies and research initiatives. The Charge nurse role models' professional values, beliefs and attributes in accordance with the SJHH mission and College of Nurses standards.
QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:
Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
BScN required
5 years Orthopaedic nursing experience required including familiarity with total joint replacements, fractures, musculoskeletal injury and prescribed treatments
Familiarity with casting, splinting, dressings, injections, preparing for and assisting with minor surgical procedures, specimen collection
Evidence of leadership ability, including past experience as a charge nurse/clinical leader/resource for the team
Physical and mental ability to work in fast paced, high-volume clinic in front line and supervisory role (bending, lifting, walking, standing, mental capacity)
Ability to organize and prioritize patient care activities with an ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations and risk mitigation.
Strong problem solving, conflict resolution, time management and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team model
Providing education related to orthopaedic treatments and discharge instructions/follow-up care to patients and families (e.g. cast care, brace and appliance application, wound care, osteoporosis, injections, crutch use, etc).
Maintaining inventory of orthopaedic supplies and devices (adjusting quotas, ordering supplies.), ensuring equipment and supplies are adequate, in safe working order, and coordinating repair and replacement.
Manages expenditures to remain within budget guidelines
Coordination of clinic bookings, surgeon blocks
Demonstrated ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with members of the interdisciplinary team, patients/clients and families required
Fosters effective employee and labour relations through knowledgeable interpretation of hospital policies and collective agreements
Supports staff in problem solving and decision making, providing coaching and feedback in a positive and supportive manner
Initiates and leads change effectively within the program by systematically evaluating the quality and effectiveness of practice and procedures
Reviews and revises policies and procedures that will ensure excellent delivery of service
Working collaboratively on organizational initiatives such Same Day Surgery total joint program
Demonstrated computer software skills with knowledge of Epic, PACS, MS word, Clinical Connect, incident reporting systems, internet searches, PowerPoint
Evidence of commitment to ongoing professional development
Evidence of good attendance and work record essential
Conducts other duties as assigned by the manager
