McNally House opened its doors in April 2008. This free-standing, six suite, home-like residence provides free of charge, 24-hour specialized palliative care to people living with a terminal illness, as well as those in their life circle. The hospice is a non-profit organization serving the Niagara West communities of Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln. McNally House is Ontario's first rural teaching hospice. Along with the highly skilled professional staff, McNally has over 120 volunteers who give of their time and talents each week to help the residents and their families deal with life's greatest challenges.
The Registered Nurse shall, through the nursing process determine and provide the professional care needed by the residents. Reporting to the Director of Care, she/he will assume a lead role in the interdisciplinary team providing direction and supervision for the care given by the Personal Support Workers and the Hospice Volunteers. In addition the Registered Nurse will liaise with all other health care providers to develop and maintain a client-centered, goal-oriented plan of care.
Qualifications: Education and/or Experience
BScN with a Certificate of Competence in the Province of Ontario
Must be a current registrant in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Must possess Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Nurse Certification or commitment to pursue certification
Completion of The Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care Certificate is mandatory and preferred; commitment to take within one year of hire is accepted.
Minimum of 5 years experience working with individuals and their families in end-of-life care.
Demonstrated expertise in pain and symptom management
Ability to function in a leadership role
Experience functioning in an interdisciplinary team environment
Computer literate
Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively in small group settings
Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Reasoning Abilities:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Must have multifaceted and time management skills accompanied by flexibility
Availability: Must be available a minimum of one 12 hour shift per month including short call-in to cover sick time.
