:
RVH Adult Mental Health is a Schedule 1 Designated Psychiatric Facility. The 36 bed Acute Care Adult Inpatient Unit has an emphasis on the Recovery Model, short term assessment, stabilization and treatment. The unit includes a secure Extra Care Area with 5 beds for patients requiring close monitoring and support. An additional 5 bed Emergency Mental Health Suite is available 24 hours a day with services that include risk assessment, crisis intervention, consultation and referrals for patients experiencing acute mental health crisis. As the Registered Nurse (RN) you are a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for providing quality patient care within a delivery model in accordance with the philosophy, policies and standards of care of the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and all relevant legislation. As a qualified candidate you will have the following job requirements:
Education:
A current Certificate of Competence issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario is required
Certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing is an asset
Non-violent Crisis Intervention is required
Current CPR is required
Physical assessment certificate an asset
Post diploma courses in Psychiatric/Mental Nursing an asset
Knowledge in Brief Solution Focus Therapy an asset
Experience:
A minimum of two years' experience in an acute care inpatient mental health setting required
Knowledge with the Recovery Model of Care is an asset
Competencies:
Exceptional written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Knowledge of the major psychiatric disorders as identified in the DSM IV
Sound assessment skills with regard to physical assessment, mental status assessment etc.
Systems theory as it relates to family dynamics
Knowledge of the pharmacology in the treatment of major psychiatric disorders
Good problem solving skills and efficient time management skills
Ability to make decisions regarding patient care both independently and as a part of the interprofessional team
Working knowledge of diagnostic test and tools used in the Mental Health field i.e. therapeutic drug levels, Mental Status Exams, Beck Depression tests, etc.
Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act and Substitute Decisions Act
Sound documentation skills and awareness of legalities related to documentation
Strong commitment to ongoing education and professional development
Experience in acting in a preceptor role
Knowledge of community resources
