Position Description

The Clinical Research Dietitian is responsible for advancing care, education, and research for patients, families and communities affected by food allergy. The Clinical Research Dietitian will collaborate with the health care team and families and employ nutritional therapies appropriate to this population. The Clinical Research Dietitian will act as a resource and educator for staff, post-graduate trainees, students, families, and caregivers as it relates to food allergy. Importantly, the Clinical Research Dietitian will initiate and participate in research opportunities.

Here's What You'll Get To Do:



CLINICAL



Assess the nutritional needs of patients within the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Program and the Food Immunotherapy Clinic. Participate in oral food allergy challenges. Participate in the provision of food immunotherapy. Participate in the interdisciplinary approach to care and document accordingly. Contribute to state-of-the art preparation of food challenge and/or immunotherapy material to ensure best possible uptake, and blinding if indicated. Recommend and implement nutritional plans of care (within appropriate Medical. Directives). Effectively document and communicate the plan to the family, as well as the appropriate health care team in hospital and/or community. Promote valid and cost-effective nutritional interventions and explore therapeutic alternatives, where appropriate. Evaluate and revise the nutritional care plan using most recent and relevant patient information (such lab data, anthropometric measurements etc.). Evaluate current practice using evidence-based outcome indicators, where possible, to ensure the therapeutic needs of the patient and family are met. Provide expert consultation to the health care team regarding the nutritional needs of this specific patient population.

RESEARCH



Utilize and promote evidence-based care while integrating research into current practice. Managing research ethics, study documentation and statistical analysis. Identify, initiate, and/or collaborate in research activities and seek internal and external funding sources. Disseminate research and clinical findings through publications and presentations.

EDUCATION



Participate in Divisional and the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Program educational activities. Provide education to SickKids residents/subspecialty residents/fellows/nurses. Participate in educational activities with patients, families, and the community. Develop an educational program on food allergy management for patients, families, and community.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:



Align the nutritional activities and performance with strategic goals and objectives of the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Program, the Division of Immunology and Allergy, and SickKids. Adhere to hospital standards, policies, and procedures. Advocate to improve health care practice, policy, and outcomes. Participate in the supervision and education of dietetic interns and visiting dietitians.

Here's What You'll Need:



Must be registered with the College of Dietitians of Ontario (CDO) and be a member of Dietitians of Canada (DC). BSc in applied human nutrition or nutritional sciences. Must have completed an accredited dietetic internship program (~40 weeks) with a strong clinical component or a practicum program of equivalent clinical rigor. Successful completion of a research-based MSC or CSND certification would be preferred. Must be enthusiastic about the development of new knowledge that will assist in the management and understanding of food allergy and anaphylaxis. Must have prior clinical dietetic experience in pediatrics or clinical experience working with paediatric patients suffering from food allergy as well as immunotherapy. Clinical experience in both pediatrics and food allergy is strongly preferred. Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of multidisciplinary health care team and take initiative and leadership when appropriate. Must be flexible and have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and have a demonstrated ability to utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Experience in research ethics, study documentation and statistical analysis is required. The applicant needs to have clinical trial experience and good clinical practice training. Attention to detail and efficient time management are required. Demonstrates belief in lifelong learning and evidence-based practice. Demonstrated commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives.

Employment Type:

18.75 hours per week (Tuesdays and Fridays, in accordance to the needs of the program) 6-month contract with possibility of extension, 0.5 FTE
