The Registered Dental Hygienist provides oral health screenings and preventive services for the mandatory Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) Program and the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program (OSDCP) across the Wellington, Dufferin, Guelph geographic area.
The work of the Registered Dental Hygienist is governed by the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS) and services may include:
Oral Health Screenings
Provision of Preventive Services
Providing Fluoride Varnish Applications at Elementary Schools
Documentation in the Ontario Health Information Support System (OHISS) and ABELDent
Health Promotion and Education Activities
Areas of Responsibility:
Informs seniors or parents of children of their client-specific treatment needs.
Prioritizes and monitors children through the follow-up process as per the OPHS protocols.
Determines the appropriate re-care management interval for the client.
Provides health promotion and education one-to-one and in group settings.
Topics may include oral hygiene, dental nutrition, and facilitating access to care.
Screening of children according to the Ontario Public Health Standards and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Case management of children identified with urgent dental needs through a defined follow-up process. This includes communication with seniors and/or their caregivers and parents and/or guardians regarding the need for dental treatment and the support in accessing care.
Prioritizes and monitors children through subsequent stages of the follow-up process including, consultation with community dental/medical professionals as well as internal health professionals. Referral to Family and Children Services, when applicable as per OPHS protocols.
Screening of children and applying the Process of Care model in formulating a comprehensive, client-specific dental hygiene treatment plan prior to initiation of preventive services.
Preventive services may include: debridement (hand/ultrasonic), selective polish, dental sealants, oral hygiene intervention, fluoride varnish application, etc.
Accurately inputs and/or verifies screening findings into OHISS to initiate the school screening follow-up process.
Verifies and enters relevant preventive clinical information into ABELDent (e.g., review of odontogram, entering of procedure codes, clinical notes, etc.).
Ensures accuracy in documentation of clinical information used to compile and generate internal and Ministry statistical reports.
Hours of Work:
Regular office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
Extended office hours may be required.

Requirements:
Completion of a Dental Hygiene Diploma from a recognized accredited educational institute.
Registered in good standing with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (general or specialty certification) and authorized for self-initiation.
Minimum of 3 years full-time clinical dental hygiene experience.
Current Basic Life Support (HCP) and First Aid Certification.
Valid Ontario Driver's License and access to reliable transportation.
Travel within the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph geographic area is required.
Proficient in taking digital radiographs.
Current knowledge, experience and skills necessary to provide comprehensive dental hygiene services to children, seniors and vulnerable population groups.
Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply principles of health promotion, disease/injury prevention and determinants of health.
Knowledge with Ministry government assisted programs (e.g., HSO, Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, etc.).
Experience with dental software programs (e.g., ABELDent).
Strong knowledge and adherence to IPAC/PIDAC measures (Public Health Ontario Instrument Reprocessing Certificate is an asset).
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Excellent clinical and problem-solving skills.
Self-motivated and adaptable to changing program needs.
Excellent communication and time management skills.
Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team setting.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks to perform independently and effectively.
