Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC) is a diverse, dynamic, multiservice Indigenous health and wellness agency. We strive to provide quality, wholistic health services by sharing and promoting traditional and western health practices to enable people to live in a more balanced state of well-being. SOAHAC provides services to Indigenous people including those who live on and off reserve, status, non-status, Inuit, and Metis within the Southwest, Waterloo Wellington and Erie St Clair regions. SOAHAC has a mandate of ensuring that health services are accessible, of high quality, and are culturally appropriate. It is SOAHAC's objective to build health care capacity within Indigenous communities. Currently, we are seeking the services of a Registered Dental Hygienist to join our interdisciplinary staff team to work at both, our Chippewa site in Muncey and at our London site at 230 Victoria St in London.
The Registered Dental Hygienist, under the direction of the Manager, Quality & Compliance and the dentist(s), makes decisions within the context of prescribed instructions, guidelines and/or policies and procedures. Based on the knowledge of the organization and Dental Services, as well as, the socioeconomic and cultural level of a client's needs, the Registered Dental Hygienist exercises sound judgement in making decisions that may be beyond the scope of instructions or documentation. The Registered Dental Hygienist is responsible for contributing to the clinical and preventive dental health programs that are offered in the community.
Requirements
Successful completion of a diploma in dental hygiene from a recognized accredited college (a university degree considered an asset)
Registered and in good standing with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO)
Minimum of the equivalent of three (3) full-time years clinical dental hygiene experience required
Experience working with Indigenous people in community-based settings; knowledge of Indigenous culture, history and teachings
Must be willing to register (if not already) with First Nation and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB)
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
Community partnership building and collaboration skills
Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
Excellent customer service abilities and skills in teamwork
Well-developed organization and planning skills
Computer proficiency including proven ability to use relevant technology utilizing MS Office (Outlook, Power Point, Word and Excel) and other software
Working knowledge of ABELDent/ client management dental software considered an asset
Previous Public Health experience, as well as, experience working with children would be considered an asset
Valid Ontario Driver's "G" license; personal auto insurance and access to a reliable vehicle
CPR certification
A current satisfactory Police vulnerable Sector Check is a condition of employment
Up to date immunization record including COVID-19
Willingness to participate in Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, teachings and ceremonies.
Responsibilities
Work with the dentist in determining appropriate treatment plans for clients
Navigate dental treatment for clients under SOAHAC, including all work related to client case management
Provide exceptional customer service to our clients in all service environments
Participate in health promotion, educational initiatives and projects related to Oral Health programming
Consistently meet clinical standards of practice requirements for Oral Cancer Screenings, periodontal disease management and Periodic Comprehensive Oral Examinations.
Ensure clients receive optimal hygiene treatment based on clinical findings and their goal for comprehensive oral health.
Provide findings, recommend a course of treatment and work in partnership with clients and families to achieve desired appropriate health outcomes. Co-create a hygiene care plan using agreed upon interventions
Regularly monitor and adjust each plan to ensure goals are achieved and that the plan remains appropriate to the client's condition and/or abilities.
This job may require additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre.
