Purpose

Newmont is currently seeing a Regional Vice President, Legal for our North America Region. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the legal team in Canada to provide efficient legal service delivery to the North America Region, navigate regulatory changes in each of the BC, Ontario, Quebec provincial jurisdictions and Colorado, and collaborate with other functional groups\xe2\x80\x99 strategies (as adjusted for the local operating context), whether it be labor relations or environmental permitting and management. Project/Joint Venture support is also provided for our assets in BC, Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Essential Duties

  • As a member of the North America leadership team, the successful candidate will be accountable for the regional legal team\xe2\x80\x99s delivery of trusted advisor service beyond purely legal scope, and support North America\xe2\x80\x99s achievement of operational goals while reducing risks and de-escalate coflict.
  • Accountable for litigation strategy, litigation risk management and reporting from governance perspective.
  • Analyze changes in law in a given country/jurisdiction that impact our operations, and support the necessary planning and engagement on compliance strategy.
  • Support management of joint ventures and transactions in Canada, or involving Toronto Stock Exchange listed companies.
  • Advise the region on matters involving Indigenous relations, and country-based long term strategic planning.
  • Drive environmental legal compliance management, including associated permitting activities and regulatory reporting.
  • Execute workforce management and labor relation management related standards and policies to ensure Safe, Healthy and Equitable workplaces.
  • Oversee team members\xe2\x80\x99 delivery of legal services for variety of commercial agreements and engagements, and optimize the process for such legal service delivery.
Training & Experience
  • J.D. or L.L.M. Degree and current license to practice law
  • At least 10+ years of post-call experience gained at prominent Canadian law firm or as in-house counsel at a mining company or multinational corporation
  • Proven experience managing teams or projects
  • Familiarity with mining or the extractive sector
  • Sound business acumen and good interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage workload
  • Ability to work independently with little oversight
Working Conditions
  • Preference for position to be located in the Vancouver regional office, but Newmont is willing to offer flexibility based on successful candidate\xe2\x80\x99s circumstances.
  • Position will be required to travel to Newmont\xe2\x80\x99s Canadian and international sites to gain/ maintain good understanding of our mining business.
