Our labour union client is looking to bring on a Regional Negotiator in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

Under the direction of the Coordinator, Negotiations Section, the Regional Negotiator acts as a chief spokesperson for the union, negotiating terms for bargaining units in the federal public and private sectors, and in provincial and territorial jurisdictions. They represent the union in third party dispute resolution processes such as conciliation, arbitration, and mediation in the context of federal and provincial labour legislation and the union constitution, regulations, and policies.

The Regional Negotiator also provides advice and guidance to the union collective bargaining committees, elected officers, and members on issues related to collective bargaining, including strike strategy and collective agreement interpretation. Travel across the Territories will be required on occasion.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The key job functions are:

  • Acting as the chief spokesperson for the bargaining/negotiating committee, working with other affiliated unions and organizations
  • Preparing bargaining demands, drafting program of demands containing initial analysis and rational demands
  • Researching and reviewing collective bargaining developments in the public and private sectors
  • Tracking trends with working conditions, workplace disputes, and compensation systems, and reviewing legislative changes that might affect collective bargaining
  • Showing representation before arbitration boards, conciliation boards, mediators, conciliators, and other labour tribunals
  • Participating in national strike and negotiations strategy committees
  • Providing training to bargaining teams on process of collective bargaining
  • Providing guidance on interpretation of collective agreement to members, bargaining teams, elected officers, and other staff
  • Participating in special projects
  • Aiding organizers with campaigns when requested
  • Other duties as assigned
Education:
  • Post-secondary education in a field related to labour relations (i.e., Human Resources)
Qualifications:
  • Valid driver\'s license and reliable vehicle
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the process and practice of collective bargaining, including negotiating techniques, contract language development, and group dynamics
  • Comprehensive knowledge of advocacy techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of staff relations and pertinent legislation and regulations
  • Knowledge of the organization and structure of the federal public service, agencies and crown corporations
  • Understanding of and commitment to trade union and equity principles
  • Ability to communicate, both written and verbal, in English and/or French
Experience:
  • 5 - 7+ years\' experience in the field of labour relations is required
  • 5 - 7+ years\' experience in the field of negotiations in the public and/or private sector is required
  • MS Office Suite proficiency is required

Base Salary: $104,000 \xe2\x80\x93 $117,000 per year
  • Comprehensive benefits package
