Zaag'idiwin Naaknigewin is a newly established organization dedicated to promoting the wellbeing of Saugeen First Nation children and families and building capacity to operationalize Saugeen's child wellbeing law, Zaag'idiwin. Saugeen children and families are at the core of who we are - they are our most valuable resources. We believe it is our collective responsibility as Saugeen to care for one another.
Position Summary
The Recreation Therapy and Counselling position will focus on providing culturally grounded, land-based programming and counselling services to children, youth, and families of Saugeen First Nation. The successful candidate will foster healing, growth, and resilience through a holistic approach that incorporates traditional teachings, land-based activities, and recreational therapy techniques.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, deliver, and evaluate land-based and recreational therapy programs that promote physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellness.
Incorporate Indigenous teachings, traditions, and land-based knowledge into program design and delivery.
Provide individual and group counselling sessions with a trauma-informed and culturally safe approach.
Support children, youth, and families in developing coping skills, resilience, and positive relationships.
Collaborate with community members, Elders, and other service providers to strengthen cultural connections and supports.
Maintain accurate records, reports, budgets, and documentation in line with organizational standards.
Other related duties as assigned to support the operational success of Zaag'idiwin Naaknigewin.
Qualifications
Degree or diploma in Recreation Therapy, Counselling, Social Work, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
Registration or eligibility for registration with a recognized professional association (e.g., CRPO, OCSWSSW, or equivalent) considered an asset.
Demonstrated experience in delivering recreation therapy and/or counselling services, preferably in an Indigenous community setting.
Strong knowledge of land-based teachings, Indigenous traditions, and holistic wellness practices.
Excellent communication, facilitation, and program development skills.
Ability to work flexible hours including days, evenings, weekends, and potential overnights.
Current certifications in Wilderness First Aid and Standard First Aid/CPR AED.
Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening. (before start date)
