In accordance with the established vision and values of the organization and as a member of a multidisciplinary team within a person and family centered model of care, the Recreation Therapist works to the established standards of professional practice to provide therapeutic recreation and leisure interventions that address the specific needs of clients/residents either one on one and/or in group settings. The Recreational Therapist participates as an active contributor to the collaborative team process of developing a comprehensive care plan to support the mental, physical, social, and spiritual well-being of clients/residents.


The Recreation Therapist performs detailed assessments of the clients'/residents' recreation and leisure needs, abilities, and interests. Plans, creates, and coordinates the delivery of individualized therapeutic recreation care plans and interventions that benefit the clients'/residents' health, functional status, personal development, and quality of life. Evaluates, interprets, and documents initial and revised goals and outcomes; monitors behavioural, emotional, and functional response to interventions; maintains and reviews records to evaluate effectiveness of interventions. Communicates and collaborates with all members of the health care team, the client/resident/family, and social and recreational agencies/groups to ensure high quality recreational and leisure programming.

Qualifications




Baccalaureate Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from a recognized accredited academic institution and/or Baccalaureate Degree in Recreation and Leisure with a major in Therapeutic Recreation. Eligible for certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Valid BC Drivers License, as required.

Assessment and Treatment: Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety type interventions. Teaching: Ability to teach clients and others both one-on-one and in groups. Knowledge Integration: Integrates best practice and current research evidence to support professional practice decisions and actions. Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and members of the interdisciplinary team using verbal, written, computer communication means. Ability to effectively apply conflict resolution skills. Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve and make decisions effectively. Applies the problem-solving process demonstrating critical thinking and decision-making skills using a systems approach. Human Caring and Relationship Centered Practice: Ability to promote client-focused care that demonstrates care for and with clients and significant others, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, client advocacy and social justice concerns. Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of client care. Equipment: Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Meditech and Windows based programs. Demonstrated data analysis skills including appropriate data analysis and reporting tools. Demonstrated ability in the use of e-mail and word processing. Ability to operate other related equipment as required in the specific practice area. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
