Job Description


Purpose of Job: To directly participate in the delivery of Therapeutic Recreation/Wellness to clients/residents of Centennial Court and to do so within the approved Mission, Policies and Procedures of the Home and through the use of an interdisciplinary model of care. Qualfications:

  • Bachelor\'s Degree with major in Recreation/Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited University or College.
  • Other Education would be considered.
  • Possess a class four (4) driver\'s license.
  • Good health and necessary fitness to carry out all job classification duties.
  • Clinical supervisor and gerontology experience preferred.
  • Certified or meets eligibility requirements for certification (CTR)..
Duties: Assess, plan, implement and evaluation therapeutic recreation and leisure programs directed towards enhancing the quality of life for those clients served by the Home. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation therapeutic recreation/leisure activities for individual clients
  • Responding to requests for service and initiating referrals where appropriate
  • Identifying specific recreational therapy program needs through the monitoring of individual clients needs
  • Coordinating therapeutic recreation program plans with clients, family, significant others and the respective health care disciplines
  • Interpreting client\'s assessment findings to clients, families, significant others and the respective health care disciplines
  • Involving clients in the process of leisure education and training through the utilization of home and community-based resources
  • Providing opportunities for clients to enhance/maintain, existing/former recreational/leisure skills and abilities and to acquire new recreational/leisure interests appropriate to their lifestyle
  • Attending multidisciplinary care conferences and providing information on the client\'s recreation/leisure status
  • Supervising Activity Workers and/or voluntary staff in their delivery of recreation programs ensuring their compliance with the established activity plan(s) and service policies and procedures
  • Researching potential recreation/leisure resources which the clients can avail of in the community
  • Responsible for the provision of Pet Therapy Services
  • Serving as liaison for the residents in purchasing adaptive clothing and Boutique items
  • Participate in Resident Council Meetings and liaise with other departments and the Administrator/Director of Care
Maintains Recreation Therapy Services operational system in an effective manner. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Monitoring Policies and Procedures as well as clinical standards of practice for recreational therapy service delivery
  • Participate in policy development as required
  • Aiding in Scheduling staff and working assignments
  • Advising the Director of Care and/or Administrator on issues and concerns in the delivery of the recreational therapy service
  • Participating the selection of Activity Coordinators or voluntary personnel for the service
  • Compiling statistical data and requested reports on Recreational Therapy service delivery
  • Sitting on required institutional and community committees
  • Participating in Quality Assurance/Risk Management and Total Quality Management activities
  • Participating with the Director of Care/Human Resources in performance evaluation of staff
Assess and maintains the required physical resources for the safe and efficient delivery of Recreational Therapy Programs. Responsibilities include but care not limited to:
  • Developing and maintaining an inventory of service equipment and supplies
  • Assessing the capital equipment needs
  • Assessing the service equipment and environment for safe usage and/or condition as demonstrated by minimized incidents of injury to residents, staff and/or visitors
Ensure documentation of Recreational Therapy services as per institutional policy. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensuring group/individual interventions are recorded
  • Developing and maintaining workload activities
Serve as liaison for volunteer service and Ladies Auxiliary. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assigning volunteers to the Department Head where they will be volunteering Assisting in volunteer Orientation Sessions
Ensures safe practices are maintained to prevent injury to client and self. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensuring program activities are conducted in compliance with safety and infection control principles
  • Completing regular safety checks of service equipment
  • Taking action to correct unsafe practices of staff, volunteers and clients
Accepts accountability for facilitating the achievement of staff learning objectives directed towards the promotion of Therapeutic Recreation and Wellness. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing orientation to new employees of the service
  • Assisting with the training programs and ongoing education established with the institution, community and/or related health care agencies
  • Facilitating staff attendance at in-service sessions and conferences
  • Showing concern for staff growth by participation in in-services and team conferences Designing and implementing clinical education programs for students
  • Making constructive recommendations to meet staff education needs
Demonstrates effective leadership ability in the provision of clinical service management. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Holding self-accountable for the delivery of professional recreation therapy practices in compliance with provincial and accreditation standards
  • Demonstrating adherence to and promotion of the Home\'s resident care mission, policies, procedures and standards
  • Promoting harmonious relationships and positive attitudes amongst the interdisciplinary care team Setting annual goals and objectives to meet resident care, departmental and the Home\'s needs
  • Utilizing time effectively
  • Demonstrating effective decision making and problem-solving abilities
  • Serving as a resource person to other staff members
  • Communicating effectively through established written and oral reporting mechanisms
Accepts accountability for continuous learning that enhances professional growth in gerontology and recreational therapy service delivery. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Attending required inservices sponsored within the Home and/or by other health related organization
  • Reading health care published material relevant to Recreation Therapy and long-term care activities
  • Identifying educational needs in the process of self development and in the implementation of Recreational Therapy services
  • Reading and following the Home\'s Mission Statements and all Policies, Procedures and standards per departmental and institutional policy
  • Maintain certification through attaining required CEU\'s as per NCTRC.
Job Types: Permanent, Full-time Salary: $23.34-$24.28 per hour Benefits:
