The Opportunity

The City of St. John's Recreation division is currently seeking a motivated, energetic, and experienced individual to work as a Recreation Assistant to assist and support our Inclusive Services team.
Accountabilities
--------------------
The Recreation Assistant - Inclusion will be responsible to support and foster inclusive experiences for residents facing barriers to recreation and leisure programs. This includes but is not limited to support for participants living with a disability/barrier to participate in a program, direct programming, and the R.E.A.L. Program.
This position is responsible for assisting with the planning, implementing, and assessing of a variety of programs, activities, and events. Duties will vary according to the specific programs, services, and special events: assisting with developing program content and schedule; logistics; direct program delivery; supervision and ensuring the safety of participants; and completing other required reports and documentation.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications
------------------
Minimum of two (2) years post-secondary education in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Nursing, Physiotherapy, ABA Therapy, or Occupational Therapy
Experience working with children/youth/adults with disabilities, knowledge of adaptations, and accessibilities guidelines, and behaviour management.
Experience in programming planning and implementation and/or events for children/youth in a group setting
Experience working with and supervising participants in a group setting.
Leadership experience/training
Knowledge of various types of disabilities
Experience working with MS word, Excel and PowerPoint would be an asset
Other Requirements
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Record Screening Certificate and Vulnerable Sector Check- Dated not more than six months prior to hire
Valid Class 5 Driver's License with access to a vehicle (business insurance will be required)
Must be comfortable in an aquatic setting as some positions involve activities such as swimming and canoeing/kayaking
Hours of Work

Successful candidate will be required to work weekdays, evenings and/or weekends. Hours are assigned based on program schedule and demand. Up to 40 hours a week.
Period of Employment
: September 2025 - May 2026.
